Mistakes in the book.

I think I got some kind of defective solutions manual because there were too many mistakes in the answers. There were lots of typos and many times it has just the sequence of steps but no explanation at all supporting any of it. The manual just have the solutions so it is not a good source for anyone trying to understand how to solve the problems.

Good book but could be better supported

The Fireworks CS4 How-Tos book has a lot of useful tips but it is very frustrating to find any support, errata, etc. for the book on the publisher's website (unlike the Friends Of Ed book series which has much better support). The URL given for animated gif in-depth tutorials at the Tweening Animation page doesn't work. After searching the site referred to at Community MX, I was unable to find any such articles.

This is a great book for begginers

This book is great. I'm new to graphic design, but I've been learning Dreamweaver for the last year. I wanted to make logos for my websites using vector sets from ShutterStock.com, and Fireworks is perfect for that. This was one of the only books available, so I bought it. It was easy to follow and points out what is already fairly intuitive about FW. After several steps, I was cruising along and able to do exactly what I set out to do. And I did it in one afternoon. I've also taken some of Jim Babbage's classes on Lynda.com, and he's a great teacher. He has a good sense of humor and it's obvious he enjoys his work.

His love for both teaching and for mathematics is evident in his passion for working with students and fellow teachers as well. His specific professional interests are recreational mathematics, mathematics history, and incorporating graphing calculators into the curriculum. John's personal life is busy as he devotes time to his family (wife Gwen, and sons Chris, Jack, and Josh). He has been a rabid baseball fan all of his life. John's other hobbies include numismatics (the study of coins) and record collecting. He loves the music of the 1960s and has an extensive collection of the recorded works of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.

David Schneider has taught mathematics at universities for over 34 years and has authored 36 books. He has an undergraduate degree in mathematics from Oberlin College and a PhD in mathematics from MIT. During most of his professional career, he was on the faculty of the University of Maryland--College Park. His hobbies include travel, dancing, bicycling, and hiking.

Book nice to have but not necessary

I ordered the package with the book and the My Mathlab code, new. One thing I did not know, is that when you buy the code you automatically can access the textbook from the MathLab website. So, you could just order the code and have the book online, or order both the code and textbook and have a hard copy as well, it's really just a matter of personal preference.

Of course I wouldn't rent this book if I didn't have to, but I did and the author truly has no idea how to teach students. Thank God I decided to take this class in a traditional setting because there is no way I would have been able to teach myself on the examples and definitions he provided in this book. I sincerely hope they come out with another edition by a different author, one who understands what it's like to NOT understand math and to need a couple more steps to show how you came to a conclusion.

Better than Stewart's book... In fact, the best!

I've used both Stewart's Calculus and Thomas'. Interestingly, Thomas has been writing calculus books for a LONG time and i've picked up several editions in the used book stores, because from the first time i bought a Thomas calc book back in Jr. High for my own self interest, i was a fan of his style.
His style is that of the old-school American text book authors who wrote in a clear, concise manner of English, using tangible and visual examples. Those old writers still thought of much of the material as novel, and were appealing to a more agrarian society of students.. especially the young and booming field of engineers. This is lacking in today's texts. The only drawback is that some old texts are much too impersonal and use the passive voice for everything, which can make them very difficult to read at times.
Thomas' recent editions (at least - i can not recall for the 60's era editions) are not only formally clear, but easy to understand and read. Here are the ways in which Thomas' book beats Stewart's book:
1) His explanations are accompanied by better graphics. Thomas uses more graphics to show each example and derivation. He uses MULTIPLE frames of graphics for one example, instead of just a single graphic. This makes following his train of thought much easier.. it's almost like watching a video.
2) His writing style is more complete. He leaves out fewer ideas than Stewart. Sometimes Stewart, like most authors, forgets to mention what exactly he is thinking and the reader is left trying to figure out his train of thought.
3) Thomas guides the reader through more (graphical) derivation of concepts. Sometimes, you will find derivations which Stewart relegates to problems for the reader (don't you hate that!?), are actually shown visually by Thomas!
Thomas' book is in fact probably the best calculus textbook around. I've looked at many many of them, and fraknly, none of them are this complete and well developed... The funny thing is, Thomas' book was one of the best decades ago. It has only gotten more exhaustive and more mature!
You should have this book in your reference library at least. You are more likely to find illustrative discussion on any particular introductory calculus subject in this book than you are in other books.

I had edition 6e for cal 1 and recently purchased this edition
for cal 2. This version is much better. People who already know
calculus tell me how great edition 6e is, but the problem is that
this textbook is intended for 18-20 year olds(for the most part)
who are only being exposed to calculus for their first or second
time. 6e examples skip alot of algebraic manipulations which
can have you struggling for days, only to find out that you missed
something basic, the 12th edition fixed alot of those problems. Also in
6e the excerises at the end of the chapters will have a few equations and
then kill you with word problems,this is a problem for me because I consider
myself a mathlete and I enjoy solving equations. I understand they want you to be able to analyze and not just go through the steps, but at least put some equations in there. To sum up,the 12th edition is way more user/beginner friendly than 6e.

An Excellent Text

I used this book through three semesters of Calculus and feel like it was very understandable and taught me a great deal. It can definitely feel dry at times but it's not meant to entertain you anyway. The examples were clear and built you up to the tougher exercises. It's worth every dollar spent and I'm confident you could get through calculus courses without a professor by self teaching yourself with Thomas.

Her work at Ingram Micro is actually where her love for teaching began-by no one's fault but her own, Rosanna found herself working with other departments and their Web content almost daily. Her knowledge of the Web and patience and passion for teaching made her the integral link from a print medium to a dynamic Web resource.

Great book from begining to end

This is my first review- but that is because I loved this book.

I bought foundation macromedia flash MX first- hated it, I didn't understand what I was doing. I thought I would never learn Flash.

So I bought this book (recommended by a teacher)- Flash MX 2004 HOT, this is the best book for any program I've ever read. It makes you understand why you do and use certain things. I went through the first 10 chapters in 2 days because I was having such a great time learning.

It doesn't go into detail about the features of Flash MX professional though.

This is a great book for a beginner. The tutorials are easy to read and understand, they are not too long- You'll remember what you just did- how and why. It all makes sense. I didn't have a clue about buttons in the other book-and that was with their tutorials.

Best of its kind

I've learned a whole raft of software by following the lessons in assorted books, but I must say this one topped the lot. I'm reasonably savvy at website work (I use Dreamweaver and Fireworks) and wanted to introduce some animation on our website, so it's time to begin learning Flash. This book is incredibly easy to follow (tells you what it's going to tell you, then tells you, and then tells you what it told you), puts everything in the right sequence, and gives context or big-picture explanations exactly when they're needed. Outstanding.

Great for Beginners

This is really an absolute must for beginners. I am 76 and have been using computers for a few years and wanted to learn doing web sites. I just wish they had a book like this to learm Dreamweaver and it would have been easy to learn. When I went to learn Flash it was easy and all I can say is WOW. You can learn Flash easily with this book. If you really want to learn Flash and you are a beginner this is the book.

A great idea ...

I generally liked the book, but it did not deliver on the title.

The book does present over a dozen case studies on ethics in government positions. The case studies are well written and thought out and cover topical areas of concern to today's government leaders.

The book promises to present role-playing opportunities, and to get there from what the book presents is a long, long journey that would a coach, teacher, or referee to put in many hours fleshing things out. There is no practical way to tell what the motivations of the characters would be except in the broadest sense, and it is hard to role-play as a singular entity. By definition, role-playing exercises should have several other participants at least.

Great idea, it just was not executed well.

Case studies for the classroom and beyond

The case studies are varied, complex, and realistic. As a student, I used this as a textbook in a dual-level course on public administration. The case studies elicited thought and discussion from undergraduates. An outstanding feature of the book is that it includes examples from the non-profit sector as well as government. Although fictionalized, the case studies are obviously based on real-world examples.

About the Author

David Blatner is an internationally known expert on QuarkXPress and Photoshop and is the author or coauthor of numerous books including Real World Adobe InDesign 2, Real World QuarkXPress 5, and QuarkXPress 4/5 Power Shortcuts. His books have sold more than a half million copies worldwide. Christopher Smith is president of American Graphics Institute. A certified technical trainer and Adobe certified expert for InDesign version 1, 1.5, and 2.0, Smith teaches classes on InDesign and other publishing software at American Graphics Institute¿s Boston training center and has been involved in teaching electronic publishing and electronic document distribution for more than 10 years. Steve Werner has been a trainer, consultant, and production manager in the graphic arts industry for over 20 years. He has taught QuarkXPress, Adobe InDesign, and a variety of other graphic applications at Seybold Seminars, Rapid Graphics in San Francisco, and other venues since 1988.

The world is going Indesign, and this is why.

QuarkXpress used to rule the world of layout and Pagemaker was a program produced by Aldus. At least that's the way it was when I began my career in graphic design. I started on a PC platform using Pagemaker. After struggling with file formats and printing issues for a year, I convinced my employer to make the jump to QuarkXpress on Macintosh. My justification was that the incurred cost of new equipment and software would be paid back in reduced printing setup fees, as well as more efficient production time.

Long story short, I happily abandoned Pagemaker for over a decade, and became an ardent supporter of Quark products. In the meantime, Pagemaker was bought by Adobe and was morphed into InDesign. At first, I ignored it, since Quark had been proven to be a stable and consistent program. But, as most Quark fans, I eventually started to see how the company was resting on its laurels. Adobe was on the cutting edge, and Quark has seen a major drop in use.

They say all things go in circles, and that was the case for me when I changed jobs and was given a shiny new PC with Adobe InDesign. I had to relearn Pagemaker again, along with dozens of new features. Simply put, this book is exactly what you need.

InDesign has tons of great features, and chances are you won't know about half of them without this. And best of all, it explains things in a way that you'll understand.

If you are using QuarkXpress now, you won't be for long. You'll need this.

Time to Make the Switch

I too was terrified to make the switch from Quark to InDesign. I consider myself to be a Quark "power user" and was so comfortable in the program that I found it scary to leave. I recently saw David speak at the Digial Design Conference in Seattle and I felt assured that the time had come to make the switch - or become a technological dinosaur. So after seeing David speak I purchased the book myself to "test the waters." WOW. I was amazed by the things that InDesign allows me to do - such as dealing with transparency issues and no longer needing to save files as EPS to place in a layout program.

Keeping files in their native Photoshop or Illustrator layered format is PHENOMENOL. I saw live examples of the types of files I would use and the book gives detailed information on making the switch. It just makes sense - it's like the people who still use PageMaker?! Either catch up with technology or find yourself in the same job in 10 years. I can never imagine going back to Quark, and this book is my tour guide (and bible) to life in the new digital world.

Oh, and never again will I have to hold down the return key for an hour to update my images. Life is good.

Straightforward instruction, numerous screenshots and examples, and an easy-to-follow language makes InDesign For QuarkXPress Users an excellent and thoroughly "user friendly" informational and reference resource for a very rapid learning curve.
