PREFACE ABOUT THE BOOK

Beginning Algebra, Third Edition was written to provide a solid foundation in algebra for students who might have had no previous experience in algebra. Specific care has been taken to ensure that students have the most up-to-date and relevant text preparation for their next mathematics course, as well as to help students to succeed in nonmathematical courses that require a grasp of algebraic fundamentals. I have tried to achieve this by writing a user-friendly text that is keyed to objectives and contains many worked-out examples. The basic concepts of graphing are introduced early, and problem solving techniques, real-life and real-data applications, data interpretation, appropriate use of technology, mental mathematics, number sense, critical thinking, decision-making, and geometric concepts are emphasized and integrated throughout the book..

The many factors that contributed to the success of the first two editions have been retained. In preparing this edition, I considered the comments and suggestions of colleagues throughout the country, students, and many users of the prior editions. The AMATYC Crossroads in Mathematics: Standards for Introductory College Mathematics before Calculus and the MAA and NCTM standards (plus Addenda), together with advances in technology, also influenced the writing of this text.

Beginning Algebra, Third Edition is part of a series of texts that can include Basic College Mathematics, Prealgebra, Third Edition, Intermediate Algebra, Third Edition, or Intermediate Algebra: A Graphing Approach, Second Edition, and Beginning and Intermediate Algebra, Second Edition, a combined algebra text. Throughout the series, pedagogical features are designed to develop student proficiency in algebra and problem solving, and to prepare students for future courses. KEY PEDAGOGICAL FEATURES IN THE THIRD EDITION

Readability and Connections. I have tried to make the writing style as clear as possible while still retaining the mathematical integrity of the content. When a new topic is presented, an effort has been made to relate the new ideas to those that students may already know. Constant reinforcement and connections within problem solving strategies, data interpretation, geometry, patterns, graphs, and situations from everyday life can help students gradually master both new and old information.

Problem Solving Process. This is formally introduced in Chapter 2 with a new four-step process that is integrated throughout the text. The four steps are Understand, Translate, Solve, and Interpret. The repeated use of these steps throughout the text in a variety of examples shows their wide applicability. Reinforcing the steps can increase students' confidence in tackling problems.

Applications and Connections. Every effort was made to include as many accessible, interesting, and relevant real-life applications as possible throughout the text in both worked-out examples and exercise sets. The applications strengthen students' understanding of mathematics in the real world and help to motivate students. They show connections to a wide range of fields including agriculture, allied health, art, astronomy, automotive ownership, aviation, biology, business, chemistry, communication, computer technology, construction, consumer affairs, demographics, earth science, education, entertainment, environmental issues, finance and economics, food service, geography, government, history, hobbies, labor and career issues, life science, medicine, music, nutrition, physics, political science, population, recreation, sports, technology, transportation, travel, weather, and important related mathematical areas such as geometry and statistics. (See the Index of Applications on page xxi.) Many of the applications are based on recent and interesting real-life data. Sources for data include newspapers, magazines, government publications, publicly held companies, special interest groups, research organizations, and reference books. Opportunities for obtaining your own real data are also included.

Helpful Hints. Helpful Hints, formerly Reminders, contain practical advice on applying mathematical concepts. These are found throughout the text and strategically placed where students are most likely to need immediate reinforcement. They are highlighted in a box for quick reference and, as appropriate, an indicator line is used to precisely identify the particular part of a problem or concept being discussed. For instance, see pages 96 and 408.

Visual Reinforcement of Concepts. The text contains numerous graphics, models, and illustrations to visually clarify and reinforce concepts. These include new and updated bar graphs, circle graphs in two and three dimensions, line graphs, calculator screens, application illustrations, photographs, and geometric figures. There are now over 1,000 figures.

Real World Chapter Openers. The new two-page chapter opener focuses on how math is used in a specific career, provides links to the World Wide Web, and references a "Spotlight on Decision Making" feature within the chapter for further exploration of the career and the relevance of algebra. For example, look at the opener for Chapter 8. The opening pages also contain a list of section titles, and an introduction to the mathematics to be studied together with mathematical connections to previous chapters in the text.

Student Resource Icons. At the beginning of each section, videotape, tutorial software CD Rom, Student Solutions Manual, and Study Guide icons are displayed. These icons help reinforce that these learning aids are available should students wish to use them to review concepts and skills at their own pace. These items have direct correlation to the text and emphasize the text's methods of solution.

Chapter Highlights. Found at the end of each chapter, the Chapter Highlights contain key definitions, concepts, and examples to help students understand and retain what they have learned.

Chapter Project. This feature occurs at the end of each chapter, often serving as a chapter wrap-up. For individual or group completion, the multi-part Chapter Project, usually hands-on or data based, allows students to problem solve, make interpretations, and to think and write about algebra.

Functional Use of Color and New Design. Elements of this text are highlighted with color or design to make it easier for students to read and study. Special care has been taken to use color within solutions to examples or in the art to help clarify, distinguish, or connect concepts. For example, look at pages 190 and 191 in Section 3.4. EXERCISE SETS

Each text section ends with an exercise set, usually divided into two parts. Both parts contain graded exercises. The first part is carefully keyed to at least one worked example in the text. Once a student has gained confidence in a skill, the second part contains exercises not keyed to examples. Exercises and examples marked with a video icon have been worked out step-by-step by the author in the videos that accompany this text.

Throughout the text exercises there is an emphasis on data and graphical interpretation via tables, charts, and graphs. The ability to interpret data and read and create a variety of types of graphs is developed gradually so students become comfortable with it. Similarly, throughout the text there is integration of geometric concepts, such as perimeter and area. Exercises and examples marked with a geometry icon have been identified for convenience.

Each exercise set contains one or more of the following features.

Spotlight on Decision Making. These unique new, specially designed applications help students develop their decision-making and problem solving abilities, skills useful in mathematics and in life. Appropriately placed before an exercise set begins, students have an opportunity to immediately practice and reinforce basic algebraic concepts found in the accompanying section in relevant, accessible contexts. There is an emphasis on workplace or job-related career situations (such as the decisions of a small business owner in Section 3.1, a physical therapist in Section 7.2, or a registered nurse in Section 8.5) as well as decision-making in general (such as choosing a homeowner's insurance policy in Section 2.8 or choosing a credit card in Section 5.5 or deciding when to plant flower bulbs in Section 10.6).

Mental Mathematics. These problems are found at the beginning of many exercise sets. They are mental warm-ups that reinforce concepts found in the accompanying section and increase students' confidence before they tackle an exercise set. By relying on their own mental skills, students increase not only their confidence in themselves, but also their number sense and estimation ability.

Not what I thought

Why would the book be titled MyMathLab Edition and not contain the mymathlab kit? This was very misleading. I am unhappy and will probably never buy from this company or recommend it to anyone. They should make it clear that this book does not contain the code needed for mymathlab.

This book is amazing...

I'd say as a Production Coordinator I'm an intermediate user of Adobe Illustrator CS2. So I didn't need a book w/ too much basic training, although this book is pretty good ad providing you with the exact step-by-step procedures for carrying out certain "Killer Tips." This is a very good all-around book for Illustrator CS2. Above all, there are so many CS2 shortcuts in this book that the average CS2 user wouldn't know. I'd recommend this book to anyone that is looking to extend their knowledge of Illustrator. It's smart and succinct. It's comfortable to carry around - won't way you down, and best of all it's really inexpensive!

It's Good for beginners but the book FELL APART!

All the tips are great for beginners. I am a professional and found only 5% of the book helpful. Not worth the money for only learning 5%. Most of the tips I already knew. For sure it's a beginners book. I have to say after reading through it ONLY once......the book binder fell completely apart! The glue on the binder did not hold up at all. Now all the pages are falling out. TERRIBLE!

Decent course textbook

Although it's anything but perfect, this textbook does not deserve its current 2 1/2 star rating. It provides helpful algorithms for solving particular types of differential equations, with some proof for those who are interested, and numerous example problems. The explanations are usually concise and easy to understand, considering the difficulty of explaining some topics in differential equations. Unlike my professor, this textbook provides ample review of topics learned in Calculus, making it unnecessary for me to page through Stewart's Calculus tome.

This book does have some problems. At best, it is a useful supplement to classroom instructions, since many of the chapters are irrelevant, or deal only with applications. Sometimes its explanations are too concise, and leave the student confused. It doesn't have a table of trig identities, which is irritating when integrating trig functions in the later chapters. Furthermore, given that there are other excellent, inexpensive texts for sale, such as Ordinary Differential Equations, which are better for self-study, Fundamentals of Diffeq is overpriced. Given the nature of differential equations, the Fundamentals of Differential Equations : Solutions Manual is quite helpful. Unfortunately, it drives up the price still further.

In short, although it falls far short of Stewart's Calculus, Fundamentals of Differential equations will not automatically earn you a D. For that, you'd need to have a bad instructor.

TidBITS is well known for its series of "Take Control" publications on the web. They have now worked with Peachpit on this printed book covering Apple Mail.

Mail was created as part of OS X, and has become the mail application of choice for many Mac users. While its features and controls are, typical of all Apple software, "clear and clean", there are some capabilities for which users will appreciate further guidance. "Take Control of Apple Mail" does this quite well. One advantage is that TidBITS offers free electronic updates to the volume, solving a common problem of obsolescence which affects so many computer books.

Author Kissell focuses on Mail operations beyond the basics. While many users may rarely need such features, when they do this book will be a valuable aid. It is based in part on unpublished tips and techniques which help make the user smarter about Mail and able to use it more smoothly.

Handling outgoing mail, viewing incoming mail, and attachments for both are covered, along with saving your communications. Also, to quote, there are "nine pieces of essential advice about rules, seven ways to improve your Previous Recipients list, and six tips for working in the Viewer window". Of course, the critical relationship between Mail and the Address Book is included. And despite the quality of the Mail application, there is information about the sometimes needed troubleshooting.

While this reviewer had previously consulted other texts on Mail, he found refreshing new ideas in "Take Control" and better ways to deal with several features he had used a number of times. For everyone other than those who use only Mail's most basic capabilities, this will be an excellent addition to the Mac user's library.

If you know how to surf the Web and download software, you have all the skills you need to gain the benefits of a safe and secure Internet experience.

Today more and more of us conduct sensitive transactions via e-mail and the Internet, including online banking, stock trading, e-commerce purchasing, and personal accounts management. While the Internet makes such activities more convenient, it also exposes us to security risks. Traditional risks such as viruses, worms, and Trojan horses still plague the Internet. In addition, a new set of threats has emerged, including spyware, Internet fraud, and spam. These headline-grabbing threats, which are driven by profit-motivated criminals, are becoming increasingly sophisticated, have shorter life cycles, and use new attack vectors. Such threats pose daunting new challenges for everyone who uses the Internet.

Even seemingly safe information and entertainment sites can carry risks. For example, in a study conducted by Internet security company Symantec, researchers took a brand-new Windows PC, plugged it into the Internet without any security software, and browsed the Web. Testers spent one hour each interacting with differ-ent categories of Web sites, including e-commerce, gaming, and news sites. Surprisingly, children’s Web sites dumped the most unwanted software onto the test PC—359 pieces of adware in just an hour’s surfing!

An excellent title for home Internet users

Windows is today by far the most popular platform for workstation and

desktop computers. However, it has also proven to be the most susceptible

to a wide variety of attacks, many of which being of a distributed

(mass-spreading) nature.

Regardless of the important steps that Microsoft has taken to provide a

sufficient out-of-the box level of security, a default Windows

installation remains far from secure and not likely to survive for

long against the various hazards that access to the Internet hides. Truth

is that few users are even aware of these hazards -until it is too late-, much less being able to make an educated choice among all these protective software titles with fancy names out there.

This is where Symantec Guide to Home Internet Security comes to the rescue,

offering a consistent and easy to comprehend source of information to both

the completely novice users and those with limited knowledge in the

ways of computer security. Without going into unnecessary technical

details, it explains all that a user needs to know to protect his

privacy in windows environments.

For those that do not know, Symantec has been established as one of the

leading companies in the field of computer security globally, offering it's own

quality software solutions -with best examples the Norton Anti-Virus and

Internet Security suite. However this book is in no way written to promote

or focus to any specific software. It aims to educate the reader so that

he is able to make his own sensible choices of security-related software

and it definitely succeeds in it...

Symantec's Guide to Home Internet Security is of the few security-related

books that demand no experience or previous knowledge. In it's about 200

pages, it manages to teach with illustrative examples, tables and images

everything from the ground, without becoming tiresome or confusing to the

reader at any point.

The material covered is well distributed into 10 chapters. More

specifically:

Chapter 1 is a short introduction to the main types of Internet

risks. It shows how the Internet is full of cunning/malicious users that

will do anything to take advantage of every valuable bit of information

that we exchange.

Chapter 2 covers the most well-established techniques of

identity-stealing. It teaches you important methods to prevent them and

react in the event of identity theft.

Chapter 3 explains the logic behind firewalls, in which cases they

can protect us and how they can be used to effectively do so.

Chapters 4 and 5 cover the large subject of Malware (malicious

software). You will learn in what ways Viruses, Worms, Spyware, Adware and

Trojan horses can harm your system, how you can minimize the possibility

of being infected, in what ways you can utilize protective

software as a measure of prevention and restoration and what are the

criteria according to which you should choose those software products.

Chapter 6 continues with the subject of SPAM messages, whether they

just carry annoying advertisements or act as means of Information Phising

and Social Engineering techniques. This chapter will teach you a great deal of these techniques, how to filter out SPAM messages and determine the validity of any potentially harmful message.

Chapter 7 focuses generally on good practices for keeping your

Windows system in good health.

Chapter 8 is dedicated in presenting methods for protecting other

members of your family/environment that will use your computer with

possibly less knowledge about security or underage from unwanted content.

Windows features and extra tools for filtering access to unwanted content

are described, along with recommendations for optimum implementation.

Chapter 9 speaks about security in Wireless/Portable devices and

VoIP applications. Common usage mistakes are pointed with regard to the

severity of their potential exploitation.

Finally, Chapter 10 introduces the basic principles of

cryptography, it's most widely used applications and possible ways that we

can take advantage of it to protect our privacy.

Conclusion: If you are not familiar at all with security or have your doubts in some

things, this book can literally save you! The material covered is absolutely necessary for the survival of any windows station connected to the Internet and reading Symantec's Guide to Home Internet Security is probably the easiest way to learn it.

Excellent book

If I were to recommend one book on security to a home user, it would be this book.

First let me be clear, this book does not contain EVERYTHING relative to every subject that falls under the category of Home Internet Security. (That would take a library, not a book.)

This book will not tell you how to use every feature of any particular security software program. This book was never intended to do these things.

This book was intended to shed light on the current Internet security threats, and how to best manage them. And even though this book carries the Symantec brand name (the makers of Norton Anti-Virus and Norton Internet Security), this book is NOT biased to any particular security software. The author painstakingly gives a very thorough overview of each current major security threat or area of concern. (It even includes pending legislation in the U.S. Congress and relative links to related government documents.) The author then provides a very balanced list the best widely accepted software programs and practices to address each security threat. (Many commercially available, shareware, and free options are discussed for each security threat.) The author discusses both prevention and cure, and includes several references to many helpful web sites, security software vendors, security software review sites, technical forums, and even free online security scans.

And while this book educates, each individual reader must still take ownership of his or her own security situation. But since each reader will have different circumstances, this is a very appropriate approach. What this book provides is an EXCELLENT place for the beginning or everyday computer user to learn all about the current security threats facing computer users today. In this intent, this book is very thorough. Using this book as a educational guide and a check list, the reader can progress on to other reading about specific software programs to counter the security risks that have been discussed and actually understand the language of computer and Internet security.

The author consistently puts useful information in front of the reader in the simplest language possible for what, in truth, is very technical subject matter. The author consistently reiterates material across chapters in case the you spot read a single chapter regarding a specific threat you are interested in learning more about. Each chapter also contains a summary checklist of Dos and Don'ts.

If you are learning about computer security risks, this is the best book I've seen. I build PCs for customers, and this is going to save me a lot of typing and technical support calls. All of my customers are getting a copy of this book.

One of the best books in this category

When I review a book like this, my question is mainly "Could my Mom make sense of this if she had to remove a virus?" To that end, I look for things like clarity, accuracy, and focus. I'm glad to say this book by Conry-Murray and Weafer delivers.

Overall, the book has good, clear writing, solid examples, and thorough coverage of the topics it hits on. Good writing and clear examples go a long way in a book. Also, it's focused and hits its target well. I think that the average user who is comfortable with their computer but not technically advanced will find this material accessible.

The book starts out with a pretty good introduction to the book and the topic, at large. The scoping of the book is well laid out and I concur, it does a good job of the topic. Other topics that ae wel covered include identity theft, spam, and keeping your family safe online.

Getting rid of unwanted programs -- viruses, adware, spyware, and trojan horses -- is done pretty well. Keeping your Windows box secure, firewalls, and keeping your famliy safe while they're online is also pretty good.

Topics not well covered include broadband routers (as mentioned by another user) and how to use Windows as a non-admin account (again, from another reviewer). Both of these are serious omissions.

One big complaint that I have about this book is that it tries to be so vendor neutral that it sometimes fails the reader. What criteria should a user keep in mind when choosing AV software or a desktop firewall? Perhaps the authors didn't want to appear partisan, but honestly it's a pretty big question. They also didn't do a throrough job of getting users to keep their AV updated. And how should users detect if their software is outdated? What about Windows Update, which is another useful tool? All of these are commonly found scenarios (especially as users buy computers with AV installed but never update it) in the real world.

In terms of wireless and VoIP, I have to ask what about other, non Windows systems for setting up WEP or WPA?

While the writing is clear, the book could have benefited from another 25 or 40 pages of material covering the above. As it stands its pretty good, I hope an update can address these deficiencies and keep the clarity and focus just as high as its been.
