Perceptions and misconceptions

We all act on our perceptions. The negative reviews on Dave's book all seem to share a common thread. The book was not what the reader wanted. Well, no book is what all readers want. If the book is not what you expected, that doesn't make it a bad book. The book has to be measured against whether it accomplished its objective.

Dave states that the book is dedicated to "inspiration." He goes on in the introduction to state that the book is not a cookbook, but is aimed at motivating Photoshop users to experiment. This is consistent with a lot of Dave's Photoshop TV segments, where he will present a technique that basically is a "what if." What if I change the blending mode, or if I do this or that option under a filter.

The table of contents in Dave's book makes it extemely easy to see what's contained in the book and to locate a particular effect.

Overall, I think Dave's book is great and accomplishes what he set out to do - inspire. If I bought it expecting a Photoshop cookbook for the beginner, I'd be disappointed because the book didn't achieve my personal expectations. But that wouldn't make it a bad book, and should not serve as a basis for a bad review.

Very Disappointed with redundencies

My primary disatisfaction with the book stems from the repetition throughout the book of the identical 2 pages of content to illustrate a particular feature. If it were better organized it would have eliminated at least 20 pages of redundency. The space would have been better used to illustrate additional photoshop solutions. Also, a traditional index in the front of the book would have better served the reader. Very much overpriced for the content provided

Important Note: Despite this book's title, it is not just for users of Photoshop Elements; the advice, styles and methods (with, in a few cases, minor modifications) are easily transferable to Photoshop CS2-CS4.
I feel this book is aimed at relative beginners in Photoshop Elements/Photoshop. With this in mind, beyond instructions for print making, the author assumes the reader can profitably use advice on understanding and selecting both computer and printing hardware. To accomplish this goal, Digital Print Styles' first 80-plus pages offer excellent guidance on topics including PC/Mac differences, monitor calibration, computer peripherals, software, printing set-ups and media selection (ink and paper).
The heart of the book--the printing recipes--includes not only recommended Photoshop Elements/Photoshop instructions and settings, but also potential papers and ink sets to help achieve the desired effects.
Print Styles' final sections assume, having created gorgeous prints, you'll want to do something with them. For the periodic user of PS6 & PE4, an essential learning tool

Being the sort of person who likes to show a quality slide show I decided to buy this learning tool. I had used both Photoshop Elements and Premiere Elements starting with versions 4 and 2 respectively. Since I don't use these products excessively I suffer from cold storage from time to time. A little over a year ago my daughter got married and I was compelled to become proficient(using versions 5 & 3 at the time), quickly with both products and ultimately was able to author a very nice DVD covering her wedding shower, gown selection, a myriad of other little important things regarding the wedding preparation along the way, the rehearsal dinner and of course the main event, as well as, the morning after gift opening breakfast.

Needless to say when the wedding was over I presented them with their special DVD and immeditaely set the products aside. I recently purchased the current bundled versions of PS6 & PE4. I was preparing for a one-week trip to Yosemite National Park with my new Canon VIXIA HV30 HI Def camcorder. Before the trip I decided to get familiar with the new bundled versions of Photoshop 6 and Premiere Elements 4 that I had recently bought. At first blush they looked familiar, but I realized the more I played with them that the user interface had significantly changed - I believe for the better. So I decided to buy this aid, 'Classroom In A Book' for PS6 and PE4. Since the largest changes involved the User Interface for Premiere Elements 4, I started working on those exercises and immediately became familiar with all the facets of this great product again simply by working through the exercises, in the book.

I would highly recommend this learning aid, particularly if you are a casual user who needs to get up to speed quickly. For those who wish to become advanced, frequent users, there are other excellent reference and instructional/informative books, ie., Steve Grisseti and Chuck Engels.

Good book but Premier Elements problematic

In the couple of weeks since receiving the book from Amazon, I have systematically gone thru the lessons for Adobe Premiere Elements 4. The book does an excellent job of introducing the learner to the program. What I can't remember how to do, I can go back later to refresh my memory. Problem is, I am running into program crashes now that I've begun to use PE4 with my own video. I've converted my video to AVI (huge files!) and am hoping I can eventually come up with a finished product using the nice features to which I was exposed thru the Classroom in a Book lessons. So, buy the book but don't assume learning to use the program will be the end of it. What a hassle!

Basic How-to book

I purchased this book after purchasing the software. It comes with a CD that has files that you use with the lessons in the book. If you are looking for a book that explains how to use the software, then this book is a good basic book to begin with. It does not, however, go into advanced techniques.

great quick learning guide

I'm familiar with a lot of the CS4 products already and needed to teach myself Flash very quickly. I spent about a week going through video tutorials online, but found that none of them were sufficient in explaining the work flow. This book does a wonderful job guiding you through an entire project and I feel like I learned almost as much in two days as I would with 8 weeks of classroom instruction. Of course in a classroom you would be spending time creating your own project and having specific questions answered, but I just feel that this is great for not having the time and money to invest in a full course. After going through the project in this book, I have a much better understanding of how to work with Flash and feel comfortable enough to build my own website/presentation in Flash.

At first glance the layout bothered me because it looked very messy. However, after working through a couple pages I didn't mind it anymore. In fact I find it helpful to have all the labels pointing to the images so there is no guessing what the author is referring to. The contents might take more time to figure out if you're not familiar with similar programs and terminologies already, but I still think it's worth trying.

Same project but new features and techniques

When I review a new edition of a book which I have previously reviewed, I look for new information that I feel should have been added to the book. In the case of this book by David Morris, the website project is the same but much has been added to keep up with the new Flash features. Morris has done a great job of choosing which of the new features and techniques will be most useful to his audience. So what new information has been added to this edition of Creating a Web Site with Flash CS4?

As mentioned above, the project website is a newer, updated version of the original project. The author uses many supporting screenshots to reinforce the step-by-step instructions as he walks you through building the website. Of course, he begins with a tour of the new Flash interface and introduces the new features that you will use during the project such as the Edit Bar and Motion Editor.

Beginning the project, you start by building the background for the website using the Flash drawing tools including the new graphic primitives and 9-slice scaling. Next, you use Text tools to add static text and hyperlinks. Moving on, you learn the new steps for importing graphics into Flash from other programs such as Photoshop. Morris discusses the new dialog box and object options for layers and objects when importing Illustrator files. You use layers and the Library to organize your assets. You add a mask layer and edit masked objects to add the finishing touch to the background.

The website structure is still organized along the Timeline, as in previous editions. And, as before, you build your own interactive buttons with Button Symbols. When its time to program the buttons, the code is updated for ActionScript 3. When building the animation for the website, you use the new Motion Presets for shape tweens and 3D rotation and the Motion Editor for fine tuning your animation. The website photo gallery is updated to use XML and UI Components and the dynamic text is now formatted by CSS. You will also learn how to use Flash form and video components. Finally, you set up the HTML and SWF settings for publishing your website.

David Morris has been a website and graphic designer for many years. He was product manager for Macromedia Fireworks and Freehand, as well as part of the Fireworks development team.

This book is very frustrating and makes me not want to learn Flash; I bought it in hopes of learning Flash CS4 quickly instead I found myself confused a lot of the times. You get to follow the book step by step but it doesn't tell you why you're doing all these steps. Also there are errors when testing the movie.

Full of basic and detail information in this book

I love this reference book!
It helps designers to choose a better typeface in an efficient way. Over 2,000 gorgeous fonts are arranged very well. Thanks for the make-up, paper and book-binding, you can browse these fonts pleasantly.
Basic OpenType introductions are included in English, French and German. Small icon shows glyph supported indicates the range of using of each typeface.

About the Author

Andreana Grimaldo grew up in New Hampshire and received her Associate’s Degree in Business from Becker College in Massachusetts. She later earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and a Master of Science in Applied Mathematics from Worcester State College. Andreana has taught many levels of math from developmental through calculus, beginning as an individual instructor to at-risk and non-English-speaking students. She started teaching as an adjunct at Quinsigamond Community College in 1990 and became a full-time professor in 2003. In 2007 she was awarded the NISOD Teaching and Leadership Excellence Award. Andreana is a Boston sports fan and her hobbies include golfing, reading, learning, and family activities. Her greatest passions are her family and “figuring out ways to excite students about mathematics.”

Denise Robichaud was born and raised in Massachusetts. She received her Bachelor of Science in Physics from the University of Lowell. She then earned her Master of Science in Physics from Tufts University, where she also earned a Master of Arts in Teaching. Denise started teaching math and physics part-time in 1992, and over the following ten years taught at a variety of institutions including a private high school, as well as 2-year and 4-year colleges. She has been a full-time professor at Quinsigamond Community College since 2002, and in 2007 she was awarded the NISOD Teaching and Leadership Excellence Award. When she is not instructing students, Denise enjoys reading, playing the guitar, exercising, cheering on Boston sports teams, and spending time with family and friends.

About the Author
Cher Threinen-Pendarvis, an award-winning fine artist, designer, and educator, has influenced thousands of artists in her many years of teaching and writing about electronic design tools. Her paintings and photography have been exhibited worldwide, and her work is featured in numerous books including The Painter Wow! Book and The Photoshop and Painter Artist Tablet Book. In addition to creating hundreds of brushes for Corel Painter, Cher teaches at workshops and conferences worldwide.

Donal Jolley has been a freelance designer since retiring from the commercial printing field in 1996. A master of Photoshop since version 2.5, his artistic ability, design versatility, and Photoshop expertise have been featured in many publications, including The Photoshop CS/CS2 WOW! Book, The Painter WOW! Book, and Photoshop User magazine. Donal has taught Photoshop and Illustrator courses for students and professionals and has consulted on several prominent publications.

A unique and creative book on steriods

I was given this book by a good friend as a gift, and have looked through all of the material, and do not understand how anyone can make the mistake of thinking this was written for beginners. If I were a beginner this book would excite me to become good enough to work hard so I could DO this work. Recalling and rewriting the book? Wow. He must have gotten this one mixed up with something else is all I can think of.

This is a well-written book that says it was written for people who already have a working knowledge of Painter and/or Photoshop. (It even says so several times!) A great thing about it is it is written for both Photoshop and Painter users both. Someone with Photoshop will get a lot out of it, and someone with Painter will also. Some projects use Photoshop exclusively and others use Painter, but the authors seem to know what program to use when for the very best effects. Jolley works in ways that are innovative and there are quite a few tips I've never seen anywhere else while he pushes Photoshop further than any other art how-to book out there. Pendarvis is at her very best and shows how to do things with Painter that go beyond her Painter WOW series.

Chapter One sets a lot of groundwork, then chapter two goes straight into novice and intermediate methods. As the chapters progress (there are eight), the material gets more difficult. Each project is well developed and painstakingly moves readers through the workflow. The authors don't expect you to know everything, but they do expect some proficiency in the programs. If you have that the methods they write about are really helpful.

It is obvious the authors took into consideration that non-artists and artists alike would be able to get a lot out of the book, and there just is not another book like it on the market. And if that weren't enough, it is truly a gorgeous printing.

I have worked through every technique in this book and found it to be instructional and a big boost for creativity. The book is beautifully laid out with clear steps in each chapter for not only creating various genres of fine art pieces from my photos, but also the concepts behind composing a shot and preparing to paint. I was amazed at how much I could accomplish with just my digital camera and software.

Highly recommended to any photographers seeking to take their skills and photos to the next level!

Instead, Cher and Donal show us how to create a variety of fine art looks using those applications alone. Looks including woodcut, watercolor, oils, acrylics and pastels. In styles ranging from the old masters to contemporary.

But, what if we do know how to paint and draw? Well, I fall into that category and have been a digital artist for over a decade. Yet I'm still gleaning plenty from the art projects in this book. They've introduced me to filters I've neglected and to the proper way to use those filters. And for my money, the Pop Art section alone is worth the price of the book because of the nifty effects I find there.

Finally, like all of Cher's books, this one has a logical design that makes emulating each art project super easy. And it's like being in a classroom, because I find that a lot of my questions have already been anticipated and answered. This is another book by Cher that is a welcomed addition to my creative library and one that I highly recommend.
