For all the switchers to InDesign

Many or those who switch to Adobe InDesign from QuarkXpress or PageMaker these days. Those who do might not need a book about everything that InDesign is and is able to do. What they need is a book about the differences in techniques between the applications. Then this book is a good choice. It compares how things were done in QuarkXpress or PageMaker to how it is done in InDesign. If you also want to dig a bit deeper into InDesign you buy both this book and Real World InDesign CS. If you only want to get started and get over the obstacles with changing to new application that in principle does what you have done for years in that other application, but in another way than what you are used to, you chose this book.

I warmly recommend this book, and I use it in courses for switchers to InDesign.

I have read author David Blatner's book on quark and being very familar with that program, I found his book on moving to indesign immensely helpful. You get great tips on how to do things that you have already established in your quark workflow. The index is well organized and a quick reference.

give your images a new lease on life - this book WORKS

I was looking for a book that concentrated on using Photoshop and digital photography together without getting too wild or too complex in skill level. As a person who has used Photoshop for 5 years, both for work and at home, I still felt like I wasn't getting the most out of it. And after taking 4,600 digital photos last year alone, I decided I wanted to actually do something interesting with them. So I poured over the plethora of books out there on Photoshop: tricks, tips, how-tos, guides, shortcuts, etc. at the bookstore for 2 hours. Some books were too novice, some too difficult - - I really don't need to know how to make a surreal collage of a planet pouring a waterfall into a floating baby's outstretched hand behind a rainbow thank you. What I was searching for was a basic primer on real-world techniques with some fun stuff thrown in to give my images punch and snap, but nothing too involved. I wanted something that would get me results the same evening. "How To Wow" is that book. Having been a photographer for half my life and worked in photo labs for years and then as a digital designer, this book still completely changed the way I see a digital image. I have gone through the book cover to cover and done all the techniques, tips and tricks and THEY WORK. Even the ones I didn't think I would like ended up pleasantly surprising me. Like if you want to convert a color image to black-and-white, don't use MODE-GREYSCALE, use the Channel Mixer instead. You do have to know a little bit of basic Photoshop, but most of the tips are 3-4 steps and the results are great. These guys write well and make it absolutely clear what your result will be and how to get there. I couldn't be happier with this book! The CD that comes with the book contains all the sample images, so you can use those or your own. I found it best to use theirs first, then try it on my own image to really get the feel of the technique. My favorite chapter is "Enhancing & Exaggerating" and using glows and tints. Your digital photos will never look the same! I guarantee you will add new pop and life to your images. The CD also comes with a gaggle of free presets, so you can load those up and do one-click framing styles and other cool stuff. I also liked that this book wasn't cheesy. A lot of Photoshop effects look like obvious filters and give a cheesy result. Not these - these effects are elegant and stylish and often subtle and don't have that "Photoshopped" look. I printed out many of my images and they translate well to paper. I just can't rave enough about this book. It's already dog-eared from me taking it with me everywhere. Get it if you've used Photoshop a bit but feel like you could do more with your images.

a very good digital photo book

I don't often give 5-star reviews but I think this book deserves one. It is clear and easy to follow, and has lots of good examples to get you going. I have a number of digital photography/Photoshop books and and this one stands out because it is very useful, but without being a 500-page encyclopedic volume on all things digital. I think if you become familiar with only a quarter of the techniques in this book you'll be a much improved digital photographer and photoshop user.

Great book full of tips!

I have purchased every book jack and Ben wrote on Photoshop and have attended a 3-day workshop presented by Jack Davis and will attend his 2-day workshop in Honolulu. When it comes to Photoshop, Jack is the most knowledgeable person in the field. This book covers every trick you can think of and shows you how to solve the same problem with different approaches using Photoshop CS! The book is only 270 pages, easy to read, and with all the images on the CD, you can follow the instructions until you get it. For the beginner, you will be a pro in few weeks, for the advanced user, you will have all the tools you need in a handy concise book for fast reference. This is truly the photographer's Swiss Knife!
The best companion for this book is Ben Willmore's: Photoshop CS Studio Techniques, it covers the "why", while the How to Wow book shows you the "How" of Photoshop techniques.

Very good test coverage

There are 7 different forms of tests which covers many kind of test formats. The questions in the chapter test are pretty good coverage. The test manual also contains section review for each chapter and two final exams all with answers.

I have purchased the Christopher Mason's college algebra and trigonometry 9th testing manual as well.

The Only Way to Learn Dreamweaver CS4

I have been using Dreamweaver off and on for a number of years. I know the basics but havent really had the time to really sit down and learn it. A number of books I have purchased cover the material decently, but take too long to get to the point. Being a teacher, I feel that is important to explain the relevant points in an easy to understand manner but as quickly as possible otherwise you will lose your audience. Since I am a student in learning new technologies I try to look for tools that teach me in that manner as well. Of course there are not many tools that do that.

I have also looked at many other video tutorials on Dreamweaver CS4, I still they are not complete in all the topics to be covered in the subject.

This DVD personally, is the best of both worlds in learning Dreamweaver CS4. It covers all the beginning to intermediate topics of Dreamweaver CS4 with a book and excellent videos in an amazing looking interface. I use the Flash CS4 DVD for my class, and if I taught Dreamweaver CS4 (I may in the future), I would definitely use this DVD as my only course material.

Each topic is covered in the book and had multiple video topics (organized beautifully) that supplement each one. Along with quizzes and reference material too. I wish these DVDs came out years earlier, it would have saved me so much wasted effort trying to use inferior books/videos. I hope more Adobe and web-based topics are covered in future DVDs as I will use them for any class I teach.

A must buy for anybody wanting to learn (or teach) Dreamweaver CS4.

Best Training Material for Dreamweaver Cs4

This is the best video/class I have yet to experience. Very hands on with grading and awesome video quality. Ms. Stryker is a great personality. The other instructor you wonder if she is really breathing but she too gets the job done. You get a sound understanding of main features. I would have love some more info on spry & widgets. This allowed me to be way ahead of the class I was taking. Dare I say ahead of the teacher who was not yet up to date on features in cs4. If you are making a choice DONT BUY THE the other ONE By TOTAL TRAINING. JANINE WARNER SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF PUTTING OUT SUCH AN ELEMENTARY PRODUCT THAT TEACHES ONLY CHILD LIKE/UNPROFESSIONAL sites. You will be so irritated by what she calls the chocolate game. I liked it so much I am looking for a video by same company for flash and photoshop. Good Luck.

quick easy lessons

The video and accompanying booklet are a nifty way to quickly pick up the basics of the latest Dreamweaver version CS4. En route, you also learn in a straightforward way the most common HTML tags, and how to use CSS to factor out styles from your HTML files. At the highest level, you get to see how to define a common look for many of the files in a website.

The lessons drill down from there into the using of Dreamweaver for a particular file [=web page]. Each lesson is short; rather bite sized, as opposed to the typical massive chapters of a book on an entire programming language. (Take a look at many books on C++, C# and java, for example.) What you find is that Dreamweaver provides a rich user interface that makes it easy (and maybe even fun!) to layout HTML elements in a page.

Adobe being Adobe, they wrote Dreamweaver to incorporate image editing abilities typically found in pure programs dedicated to that subject. (Think Photoshop.) So one lesson gives simple image tweaks that you can do; without having to go fully into Photoshop.

Ditto for editing Flash animation files.

Please keep in mind that the video (and its booklet) really only touch on the main points of Dreamweaver. If your budget can stretch for it, consider getting the authoritative text by Adobe on Dreamweaver, Adobe Dreamweaver CS4 Classroom in a Book. When you have assimilated the video lessons and are comfortable with more details, the latter book may prove helpful.

Jan Kabili is a digital author, instructor, and artist. She has taught hundreds of students how to use Adobe Photoshop, ImageReady, and GoLive at Lynda.com's Digital Arts Training Center in Ojai, California. Jan's "Designing Web Graphics" column appears monthly in Mac Design magazine. She has spoken at Photoshop and ImageReady Web design conferences around the nation. She also holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in Electronic Art from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and has exhibited her digital artwork and photography professionally. She is the co-author of the previous edition of this book.

Deep ImageReady

The most comprehensive tutorial you're likely to find covering PhotoShop's "little web sister", leave it to Lynda.com to come up with THE ImageReady book. Don't let the title mislead you, especially if you're already a long-time P-Shop veteran. The information contained in these pages, accompanied by outstanding tutorials and full color illustrations, is NOT a rehash of stuff you already know; it is a means of making the transition from traditional publishing to creating full-blown web pages with minimal compromise.
Even seasoned users of Adobe's cornerstone image editing tool may find some new and useful tips in streamlining graphics production - I certainly did. Instructor Jan Kabili makes the journey such a pleasure (not to mention a productive use of time), one could actually become converted to working in lo-res art! As in other titles by this publisher, the exercises are straighforward, economical and plentiful - the reader is presented with a great deal of material in relatively short order, yet in a way that is not at all difficult to retain practical information.
Granted, Adobe ImageReady is not a web management tool ..... that's Macromedia Dreamweaver's job, and though it may not integrate with that program as closely as, say, Fireworks, it contains no shortage of tools for fully preparing, creating, optimizing and animating raster images for web use. This entry in the highly-praised Hands-On-Training series is as good an introduction as you'll find on making full use of ImageReady in a short time, and a genuinely enjoyable one at that.

My favorite tutorial books for software are the Hands On Training and the Classroom In A Book series. And, if forced to choose one series or the other, I'd choose H O T.
Authors Lynda Weinman and Jan Kabili have done a great job.
Although I remain a devotee of CIB methods, my library will include the HOT books for all complex software.
Discussion of animated GIFs, automation and integrating with other programs, such as GoLive, Dreamweaver, Illustrator, Acrobat and QuickTime [Chapters 13, 14 and 16] are of especial importance.
This book is a must for users of Adobe's ImageReady and Photoshop.

This is by far the best and most informative and detailed book of its kind. It covers every aspect of "everything you ever wanted to know about" rollovers and rollover animated menus! It does not leave you 'missing something' or saying: 'yes, but it really doesn't cover...' - It covers everything! The accompanying CD is excellent!

I better not get charged for something I didnt do

I received the book and as soon a i opened it i saw that it was split open. It is damaged alot. I better not get charged for something I didnt do, as I did with the last book i rented. I ended up paying 135.00 for a half ripped page when it came like that!!!

About the Author

Judy Beecher has an undergraduate degree in mathematics from Indiana University and a graduate degree in mathematics from Purdue University. She has taught at both the high school and college levels with many years of developmental math and precalculus teaching experience at Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis. In addition to her career in textbook publishing, she spends time traveling, enjoying her grandchildren, and promoting charity projects for a children's camp.

Judy Penna received her undergraduate degree in mathematics from Kansas State University and her graduate degree in mathematics from the University of Illinois. Since then, she has taught at Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis and at Butler University, and continues to focus on writing quality textbooks for undergraduate mathematics students. In her free time she likes to travel, read, knit and spend time with her children.

Marvin Bittinger For over thirty-eight years, Professor Marvin L. Bittinger has been teaching math at the university level. Since 1968, he has been employed at Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis, and is now professor emeritus of mathematics education. Professor Bittinger has authored over 190 publications on topics ranging from basic mathematics to algebra and trigonometry to applied calculus. He received his BA in mathematics from Manchester College and his PhD in mathematics education from Purdue University. Special honors include Distinguished Visiting Professor at the United States Air Force Academy and his election to the Manchester College Board of Trustees from 1992 to 1999. His hobbies include hiking in Utah, baseball, golf, and bowling. Professor Bittinger has also had the privilege of speaking at many mathematics conventions, most recently giving a lecture entitled "Baseball and Mathematics." In addition, he also has an interest in philosophy and theology, in particular, apologetics. Professor Bittinger currently lives in Carmel, Indiana with his wife Elaine. He has two grown and married sons, Lowell and Chris, and four granddaughters.

Great in Many Ways

As a math tutor, I am familiar with many books. I really like this book because it explains everything I would want the student to know. It illustrates all the common pitfalls very clearly.

***** 5 stars for presentation (layout, typesetting, use of color, organization).

***** 5 stars for content (the authors seem to be very in touch with what explanations work for students both in the short term, and what explanations are best for them in the long term.)

***** 5 stars for the exercises. There are a lot of exercises in each section (usually around 100?). They cover the basics all the way up to what they call the 'sythesis' problems, where the student can challenge themselves to do advanced problems. I really like the synthesis problems because they are do-able and can make the student start to feel confident.

Impressive presentation

This is an impressive presentation of algebra & trig. It has a wealth of well designed visual aids and clear worked examples. Is it worth the list price of $144? No! There are scanty few textbooks that I would deem worthy of such outrageous prices. But, since this one can be obtained used for a reasonable price, I'd give it a thumbs up with no reservations.

BTW - the previous reviewer's one star rating only reflects the publisher's (or Amazon's) failure to provide adequate details of the nature of book. That really has nothing to do with conveying the quality of the textbook's presentation of the material.

A great buy!

This is a very well thought out book, on Algebra 2 and Trig. I tutor several kids through the summer every year....and we will ALL get a LOT of miles out of this book. There are approx. 1000 pages to this hard bound book, AND solutions to the problems are included. I have been tutoring Alg II and Trig, since high school, and I am a retired Engineer. This book is as good as any I've ever used for tutoring.
