About the Author
David Krogh has been writing about science for 27 years in newspapers, magazines, books, and for educational institutions. He is the author of Smoking: The Artificial Passion, an account of the pharmacological and cultural motivations behind the use of tobacco, which was nominated for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize in Science and Technology. In 1994, he began work on what would become Biology: A Guide to the Natural World, and in 1999 he completed its first edition. Since then, he has produced three more editions of A Guide to the Natural World along with a second textbook, A Brief Guide to Biology. He holds bachelor’s degrees in journalism and history from the University of Missouri.

I found this book to much easier to read and understand from all the previous textbooks assigned to biology courses. The graphics and tables and examples are completely explained. The format asks questions and answers them in a simple, easily understandable text -- not like the mumbo jumbo that a person would have to read over and over to finally understand its meaning.

Confusing Text Book With Errors In Reference Section

There were many formatting errors in this book, such as the glossary columns being switched around-"G" doesn't belong in the middle of the "F" vocab. Some of the page #'s listed in the index were not correct. If you must use this book then you should know that the info can normally be found close to the page listed in the index. The figures/tables were very useful and restated the text in an organized manner, which helped the flow of the writing.

I hate biology, but...

This book is easy going, plus it arrived on time for my classes... even though it's paperback and a bit thick, if I were a teacher I would suggest it to my colleagues. One thing I regret is not getting the study guide materials too.

A helpful study companion!

The regular textbook lists answers to the odd-numbered problems. This solution manual breaks down the whole (odd-numbered) problem, showing you how to solve it, step-by-step. It's very useful in helping you visualize the problem. It's low cost, using fully black-and-white printing, soft covers. I also highly recommend the Casio FX-115ES scientific calculator once you get to chapters 5 and later. It's display is different from all other calculators. Casio calls it a "natural display".

Bittinger always writes great textbooks. I love this solution manual that goes with the Intro and Intermediate Algebra book, too. Bittinger and Beecher give complete step-by-step explanations of how to work each problem. Really incredible! I tutor math, and with this book, my services are probably not needed by most!

Readable, and a good guide to what else to read

This was a barely average book from a readers stand point. The story of the life of Simon Bolivar was quite interesting, but the author seemed bound and determined to sedate this excitable tale down to a sleepy murmur. The index was poorly done, and the book lacked anything in the way of personal writing of the principle, or anything from his intimates. It also had a notably sophomoric feel, and for a biography of such a looming historical figure I find that unacceptable.

Another "Go To" book

I use these author's books when teaching Photoshop and Illustrator in a Tech college here in New York City. I find their superior organization, clear language and wonderful full color gallery of examples, a good compliment to my teaching style. My students appear to find them extremely learner friendly as well.

I am glad that as this programs become increasingly complex, a second volume dealing with more advanced features has been made available. Some of the features this book has helped me get up to speed on are: Photo retouching (with emphasis on portraiture), advanced color correction tips, image montage using layer masks and blending, tinting and sharpening in the service of creating original effects. There is also excellent coverage of camera Raw features.

The clearly articulated procedural (step by step) presentation, reduces learning time enormously and makes gaining competency within a short time frame, a realistic goal.

So far, So good

I ordered this book for a class. I assumed that my instructor would reference it during class time, but he has not thus far (and we've passed mid-term). HOWEVER, because he seems more interested in design aspects and NOT application/technical aspects, THIS BOOK has been an invaluable resource. I have many books like this as it relates to the application itself -- I own the books but don't read them; this is the first time a publication has been easy enough for me digest. I am not a connoisseur of technical publications so I can't rate it in that regard, but I can say for someone who learns best when they SEE the steps, this book has helped me get over that hump in learning an application through using a written resource.

I'm an experienced Photoshop user and wanted to update my skill set with CS4 features. The new features are easy to find in this book--you just look for the red stars. I also wanted to learn more about the Adjustments panel and layer masks, and this book delivered. It has lots of techie tips and also creative techniques. This book is packed with information! The photos and book design are also great.

About the Author
Professor Erik Brunvand is an associate professor in the School of Computing at the University of Utah. He has interests in computer architecture and VLSI systems in general, and self-timed and asynchronous systems in particular. One aspect of his research involves compiling concurrent communicating programs into asynchronous VLSI circuits. The current system allows programs written in a subset of occam, a concurrent message-passing programming language based on CSP, to be automatically compiled into a set of self-timed circuit modules suitable for manufacture as an integrated circuit. He is also interested in investigating the effects of asynchrony on computer systems architecture at a higher level. To explore these ideas he is building a series of prototype asynchronous computer systems out of FPGA and custom VLSI chips.

Good book, but not without flaws

This book provides a good introduction to synopsys and cadence software, however it is not without many flaws.

First of all, throughout the book the author reference the University of Utah libraries which are supposed to be available online, but were nowhere to be found. This made it very difficult for me to follow along, since I was using the NCSU libraries which are claimed to be supported by this book, but are not fully. This book seems like it was written for a specific purpose (to teach U of U students how to use VLSI design software the way it is set up on their campus). That's great, but it doesn't belong in published book format.

Also, when the author finally discusses synthesis using design compiler / vision, he does a terrible job explaining how libraries work and where to find them. Once again, it assumes you are using the set-up at U of Utah and its all there for you.

Triumph d'VLSI

Fantastic text using insight, background material, and overall knowledge from premier user in EDA design tools. Erik does a tremendous job of explaining things and providing step by step detail in using complex VLSI design tools for creating design flows. I have known Erik for several years and he amazes me in his level of compassion, knowledge, and gift of teaching in a very complex area. This book is excellent for users both in the academic and commercial world who are looking for a guide that will help users learn the material well and provides a great reference for those that already have backgrounds in this area. This is a book that belongs on everyone's bookshelf not to mention having it very close by for reference while doing anything of importance in VLSI. More importantly, Erik provides the files for users, so that they can follow along and create their own libraries.

Good book for starter

It is an ideal book for starter to learn the design flow of digital implementation using Cadence and Synopsys platform. The usages of the tools are described (much better than reading the long manuals). However, I think the starters usually cannot do the steps as smoothly as described in the book, since the users usually will encounter some error messages. The book seldom mention the method to solve the error messages displayed by the tools.

An excellent textbook for first-year college students.

This book provides a good range of diverse materials for a teacher in a first year English course. There are multiple genres and themes, a section of famous paintings for discussions (useful for discussions on literature and art), among other helpful features. The Conscious Reader is an antidote to readers which have the same standard writing for student use.

The book does provide a diverse range of genre. It works well as a literature textbook. However, the quality of the book binding is poor. Students purchase this $50+ textbook only to have chunks of it fall out before the end of the semester. I suppose the publisher sells more textbooks that way, since few books are resold as used books, but I can't recommend it for just that reason.

A very good read! This has made me want to read many other books!

I was instructed to purchase this book for my English 1 class. We are using the book in the following manner:

1. Selected a story to read.
2. Read it.
3. Write a review about what we read.
4. Discuss the story and the review.

Under this concept I have been forced to read many of the items numerous times. This has been quite fun as many of the pieces are easy to read again and again and maintain interest. The authors and the pieces that were selected for this book were well chosen. While I can't say that I have enjoyed every piece that I have read I have yet to find anything that was poorly written. This is a great book to use to study the English language.

Great text for NC 7th grade Math

We're homeschooling our 12 yr old for the first time this year and I needed a Math text that was simple enough for me to understand yet not so easy my son would be bored. I had used another Math text written by Lial for a college level class and was very impressed. This text explains concepts and procedures in simple language and has numerous examples to use. I would recommend buying the accompanying Solutions Manual too. I have had up to college level Calculus and my son has been in public school for 6 yrs so we may have a little stronger Math background than others, but I do think most homeschooling parents would be able to use this book successfully. The concepts are written simply and have a lot of explanations and helpful hints in the "Note" boxes. Example: Purple Note box: "One way to remember which symbol to use is that the "smaller end of the symbol" points to the "smaller number (number that is less). 1 < 4, 0 > -3.
Very practical information and strategies to memorize steps. We'll be getting into Factoring soon (ugh!) and this text breaks it down so that even I can enjoy it.

Excellent Condition of Textbook!

This textbook was in excellent condition when I received it. The access code is in the book and the price of the book is reasonable. For instance, this same textbook at the university where I attend is nearly $300 which I thought was ridiculous. However, my professor stated that it was possible to get only the access code which is under $100, but I had difficulty locating that particular access code because the access code only came in 4th edition; I needed 5th edition. Overall, when I received the textbook, the access code works and I was able to set up my account/profile for MyMathLab. This book is brand new and the access code has never been used. Very happy with everything!

The Book is Excellent for Reviewing

Being that it has been more years than I care to confess to since I took a math class and am pursuing my Bachelor's after all these years, I decided that I needed to review Pre-Algebra before taking an intermediate Algebra class this upcoming semester.

This book is well-structured and explains in just enough detail what steps need to be taken with clarity. Even if math is not your favorite class, this book will help ease the pain.

Just okay

I ordered this so I can better understand the materials I was learning and double check my work. This is a good tool but not quite what I was hoping for. Not all the sections are in this book the part B's are missing and the exercises in the materials are not addressed either. Overall, I'm still glad I purchased the solutions book but wish it had all the exercises so I could know exactly what I'm doing right or wrong.

I am studying to be an elementary teacher and have been struggling to understand some of the mathematics concepts. The solutions in this book are a great to help me understand. I recommend anyone who is struggling to get this manual. YOu will not be disappointed!
