About the Author
Bob Blitzer is a native of Manhattan and received a Bachelor of Arts degree with dual majors in mathematics and psychology (minor: English literature) from the City College of New York. His unusual combination of academic interests led him toward a Master of Arts in mathematics from the University of Miami and a doctorate in behavioral sciences from Nova University. Bob is most energized by teaching mathematics and has taught a variety of mathematics courses at Miami-Dade College for nearly 30 years. He has received numerous teaching awards, including Innovator of the Year from the League for Innovations in the Community College, and was among the first group of recipients at Miami-Dade College for an endowed chair based on excellence in the classroom. who likes math, i know that i am glad to be done with school and no longer have to take math classes. that book was in very good condition when i had bought it, i was able to use it for two semesters because the content covered two classes.

It's an algebra text

Concepts are presented once, and only once. There are places where references to other parts of the book would be really nice. I believe this book is available in a volume set, which would be much easier to carry (it's heavy).

Very good but could be better

I am literate with Photoshop and Illustrator but found a steep learning curve learning Lightroom. I read and studied Kelby's book "the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom book for digital photographers" and found it lacked essential basic information (like what is a catalog and how that differs from files)though it did cover many subjects. This book "Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 How-Tos: 100 Essential Techniques" by Chris Orwig answered 99% of my questions succinctly. It gave me a working, bread and butter, knowledge of how the program works, what it does that other programs don't, and why and how I should use it.
Now the negatives, only one. Lousy print quality. The examples are to small to see without a magnifying glass and everything is in black and white.
Would I recommend? Unequivocal Yes. Read it first and if you still have questions then buy Kelby's book. At least you'll have a foundation to use to start learning from Kelby....

One more Adode Lightroom book. But probably the better one of the lot.

With an endless sea of offerings in Amazon for books about Adobe's Lightroom, it was not easy to select one that was worth its salt.

I am very glad that I choose this one, it may seem a bit simple, and non technical, but it gets many important points across in a simple listing of 100 things to know about the software, and it lists them in the natural order of your actual workflow.

The book is broken down in chapters that cover each and every module inside Lightroom, from file management and organizing, which can become a bit of a nightmare, when you are trying to sort from thousands of photos, to the techniques of retouching and adjusting lighting in certain areas of the photo.
Lightroom is an extremely powerful program and I only use it for my hobbie, but by reading the book and learning about some of the more technical features and capabilities of the software I have radically been able to change photographs that I would have considered trashing into the recycle.

The book also covers some of the final steps and outputing the already photos to print, web, etc., and it does in a very informative way, allowing you to maximize the quality of the work you have done to enhance the photographs.
I was gladly surprised to see how easy it is to create an online gallery with a few clicks of a button, and have the software even upload it to an FTP and post online.

If you are new to this software, this book will absolutely help you navigate the software with certain ease.
In the other hand, if you have used this software before and still don't master it, this book will guide you into certain not well know procedures and tricks to enhance the images captured by the camera.

The Book also strongly emphasizes on the fact that Lightroom works in a nondestructive way, this meaning, that all your original photos are untouched by the software, virtual changes are done within the program, and once you are happy with one, five, ten variations of the original, you can save them all, or output them to print, web, etc.

I have really enjoyed reading through the pages of this book enhancing my
knowledge on the use of this brilliant little program by Adobe.

Quick and readable reference

This book was a "must-buy" for me because it made it so easy to lookup and learn about specific features of Lightroom 2. I liked and used Scott Kelby's Lightroom 1 book, but I always felt innundated with too much information. Orwig's book is a KISS book....Keep It Simple for the Student. When I am working in Lightroom and I need to learn more about a feature or process I can quickly look it up and read the one or two pages of concise information that I need to know. Sometimes when I am away from my computer and have time to kill I'll thumb through the book to refresh my memory on a procedure or look for procedures I don't know.

I would have given it 5 stars but it omitted any reference to the "keyword stamper tool"; a serious omission for such a useful function.

Excellent guide to getting started with iPhone App Development

I'm a PHP programmer by trade, self taught, without a degree in computer science. So switching from PHP to Objective-C has been a big change for me. I have purchased 3 or 4 different books on beginning iPhone Application Development (including one on Objective-C) and they all seem to either gloss over the fundamentals, or give unnecessary explanation making things even more confusing. They have made it slow for me to get started creating iPhone Applications.

This book has been an excellent guide to getting started with Objective-C and the iPhone SDK. It starts out by explaining the basics of Objective-C and Cocoa, including memory management, which PHP developers aren't usually concerned with. Then talks about the development tools you have to work with and how to get started using them. The rest of the book is chock full of examples that are essential to creating iPhone applications.

If you're the kind of person that likes to learn by example, then this is the book for you. It gets straight to the point, with clear explanations, without making you wade through a bunch of lengthy tutorials.

P.S. I just realized that I got my start as a PHP programmer because of a Visual Quickstart PHP book. I must be a fan of the Visual Quickstart Guide books because I really like the layout of the pages (how they give a code sample on the right and an explanation on the left). I just think their books are really effective.

A good start, but...

I've recently looked at a few of the "intro" books to Objective-C and the iPhone SDK, and this one was, hands down, the most accessible: this is the fastest way to begin feeling comfortable making iPhone apps in Xcode. It gets off to a bumpy start, focusing on a lot of "common tasks" that you DON'T need to know to start off -- but hits a useful stride by chapter 4 and then covers a lot of ground.

HOWEVER, my biggest gripe with this book is a significant one. In an effort to teach the fundamentals of Xcode, the author has elected to ignore Interface Builder: all of the interfaces in this book are created via code. This was educational, but *it's not how the vast majority of iPhone apps are built* -- so at the end of this book, there was still an enormous gap in what I needed to know. (Apple's own example apps make extensive use of Interface Builder, IBOutlets, IBActions, and the target/action paradigm -- NONE of which is covered in this book.)

I appreciate this book a lot, but as long as it lacks any info on Interface Builder, it can't be your only resource in learning the iPhone SDK.

Okay introductory physical geography light lab book

This is a workbook with paired KMZ files located on the website.

Our professor used this in an aerial photography interpretation class to try and familiarize everyone with Google Earth. It's much too technical for this use - dealing very often with "Why/how was this particular landform created" questions. We got by stressfully on Google and Wikipedia's bounty, but this is begging to be paired to an introductory physical geography textbook. Expect around 1 problem per chapter for the teacher's edition to get the answer wrong, and make sure to do all the work in advance so that you know how to prepare your students for any rough edges (like the exact algorithm used to determine angle of repose). In the end, the professor decided to skip many of the chapters previously assigned for being too heavy on geomorphology (which she didn't have a background in and found it hard to fact-check) and too high in errors.

If you've used Google Earth for a few hours on your own, you're not going to learn much about the application here.

great price for rental, but then it's Algebra...

It's Algebra. It's my third try at Algebra 2. Both previous times I did it online using MyMathLab and failed both. This time I'm taking it in person using this book, and so far it's a big help. Clear descriptions, lots of practice problems.

Still, it's Algebra. I'd rather read Ulysses.

The rental price was GREAT though.

This is a unique book whose author is known to insiders as both a top writer and the staff member the Los Angeles Times selected to help their top writers get even better. Baker is an author who realizes that good journalism isn't as just about stylebooks and grammar and accuracy, but also about identifying the core of real stories and how to extract strands of fact, quotes, and style on deadline and weave them together fast. it's helpful for future purchasers to know that this isn't a teacherly book, but someone who backs his recommendations with a real life understanding of how newsrooms move. how many other journalism textbook writers have their own rock bands?

Helpful tips, excruciating read

This book attempts to help journalists figure out the thought process that goes into organizing stories. To that end, this is a helpful tool for anyone who has struggled to piece together all the facts of a complicated story as well as coaches who are helping writers organize their thoughts into a coherent, flowing series of sentences. The problem is that it also is a difficult read that is full of complicated flowcharts and takes a long time to get to the point. But if you can get through it, you will come away with a better understanding of just how it is you get from the notetaking stage to the printed page -- even if you've never thought about it before.

The best advice ever for writers

Newsthinking by Bob Baker is aimed at journalists, and certainly they will get more benefit out of it than they would from a
4 year college course. But even more important, the advice here is essential for EVERY type of writer, not just journalists.
Baker teaches us how to see things from the READER's viewpoint, how to hold their interest, how to make your material a "must-read". This shouldn't even be called a "textbook". It is the polar opposite: it's lively, fun, and totally unpretentious.If you have any aspirations of being any kind of writer, this book will give you the edge you need to succeed. It did for me.
