Since Apple did not provide a written manual, this book identified several functions I was unaware existed. The book is a very easy read and does not read like a typical user manual. The author relates a lot of the functionality in a fun and engaging way.

OOPS! Useful and detailed, but it chaffes my paradigm...

I read through the first chapter, glanced at the others, started on the project in chapter one, then realized something. I use golive because I find the numbered column on the left side extremely useful. I'll bet this software if used to it's full capacity would be excellent in a production environment where you have several websites to build in a very short time. I don't have that affliction.
I also noticed, after dragging and dropping the component parts for the web page, INLINE STYLES IN THE CODE! WHAT? WHY?
I've spent too many years trying to understand what goes on under the hood of a web site and it's pages. GoLive seems to be more of a burden than a help!
Truly, if you know how to write good algorithms, understand css,PHP, javascript, and MySQL, and can organize your files into a folder structure that makes sense to you, why not do it that way?
I'm just saying...

PS: Adobe just announced that it will no longer support GoLive.

Kinda lame, but maybe it's the software, not the book

I lost my copy of Dreamweaver software and happened to have a copy of Golive, so I figured I'd try to learn how to use it. I bought this book and went to town. I had a hard time following the instructions because it shows you one little section of the screen at a time and tells you to go there. Well, of course certain menus aren't always visible all the time, so if you don't see what you're looking for right away, you don't know what to click on to make that little section appear. So even with the illustrated manual, I still felt lost quite a bit.

Another drawback is that if you want to look up how to perform one little function, you can't do that.

I guess this book is good for learning how to build the sample site outlined in the book, but it's not great as a reference to use while trying to build your own site.

I finally gave up and bought another copy of Dreamweaver, which handles a lot better and is much more intuitive than GoLive. GoLive is lame.

This is the best manual, yet. Much better than previous versions. It is error free. I found that all the misakes I made in learning the tool placement were my poor eyesight and understanding. All examples are to the point and you are given excellent opportunity on how to do work on your own. Like in extra credit. This is an essential book in learning GoLive. Take your time, do a chapter at a time. I would not be without it.

Mastering CSS within Dreamweaver

As a novice web designer I thought I was in for a tough time but I bought the book anyway because it was the only book focusing on using css with dreamweaver cs4. I have been pleasantly surprised. I have had little trouble working through the tutorial oriented chapters, stopping now and then to check my code against the authors. The book suits people who like to work with split view and gives plenty of practice flipping back and forth. I am now on my second pass through the book. Its the sort of book where you gain deeper understanding of CSS on subsequent passes.

I must admit I swore at it a few times but later appreciated the small "gaps" as opportunities to learn rather than fall into rote learning habits. When you don't fully understand the CSS you can just complete the code and move on then come back later to develop your knowledge.

I still find CSS a little torturous and it will take me a while to get used to the "trial and error" design process. This book is a difficult but good experience. You will need the patience of Buddha. I find myself highlighting paragraphs which I know will be important when I'm on my own developing my site. I can't imagine any books on "just" CSS that would do the job better and all the books on Dreamweaver simply do not train you in using CSS.

You could actually develop a professional website with lean code using only this book and to get the best out of it you should do that even if it is your own fictitious creation.

If you have to buy only one book on Dreamweaver and one on CSS get this book and save yourself getting two books.

If you are looking for clearly written, step-by-step tutorials, this is not the book for you. If you are not 100% completely familiar with the Dreamweaver interface, you will find this book almost impossible to follow. While there is some useful information in the book regarding CSS in general, tying it all together with Dreamweaver is where this book falls flat. Trying to follow the steps for doing even simple tasks is tedious beyond description. Screen shots of essential operations are few and far between, so if you are a visual person you'll be pulling your hair out.

If you are looking for a clearly written easy-to-follow, tutorial type book with tons of screen captures, try "Adobe Dreamweaver CS4 Unleashed" by Zal Ruvalcaba. I found it much easier to follow overall.

Mixed feelings

For anyone to say this book is great for beginners tells me they are clearly not one. As proficient as I am (or, I guess, was) on Adobe GoLive, being forced to make this transition to Dreamweaver has proven to be difficult, to say the least. I am sorry to say that this book only increased that frustration. By page 150 I am having visions of sugarplum fairies and smoke coming out of my brain. I have had to repeat the lessons a few times as the authors assume we are keeping up with the array of overwhelming coding and what seems like Algebra 201. If you are a fan of coding, no problem. If, however, you happen to function intuitively (as GoLive used to let us), you are in for a culture shock. Welcome to code inferno.

To be fair, it is not really the author's fault, as Dreamweaver seems to almost be designed to kiss your artistic abilities goodbye in exchange for endless codes and numbers. Sadly, most of us artists flunked math.

I give this book four stars because the authors, at least, try to make a creative venture out of an otherwise Pythagorean pursuit.

UPDATE:

The other book I ended up using ('Dreamweaver CS4 Digital Classroom' by Jeremy Osborn) worked, for me, like a charm and helped me discover the intuitive side of Dreamweaver! Yes, while not apparent, it does have one.

Exactly what it says it is

I've only been using final cut pro for about 8 months now, and in the last few weeks using this book I have learned almost as much as the 7 1/2 months before that. The book is exactly what it says it is: a fcp training book. Just follow each exercise one at a time, and you won't be disappointed.

I feel I should comment on what a few other reviewers said though. First, to the reviewer who said something like "Ok if you like computer manuals", that's just wrong. This is nothing like a technical manual. I have a few of those for fcp, and when you use those you really need to know what you're looking for before you can find it. Not the ideal situation when you're new to fcp. And as a matter of fact, this book even says that it is not meant to be used as a reference manual. Instead, it's the fcp training, but self paced.

For the user who said it might not be that good if you don't have the time, well, learning fcp is a major undertaking, and one way or another you have to serve your time to really learn the tool. So yeah, you'll spend time with this book. But the great thing is that every lesson starts with a time estimate (usually around an hour). If you ask me that's better than just wading through endless information. Put everything else aside, and focus on the exercise for an hour or so.

One last thing, I really love how each exercise builds on the shortcuts used in the previous exercises. I'm a hardcore keyboard shortcut user in every program I use, and this book is really helping me to nail those down for fcp.

I'll definitely move on to the next apple fcp training book that follows this one.

This was an Amazon Verified Purchase. It is an older training book for use with an older version of Final Cut Pro. I was surprised to find it on Amazon. It arrived in great condition and promptly. It even still had the DVD enclosed as indicated. This was an excellent experience.

This book is better than two university classes I've taken in Final Cut. If you are a beginning or intermediate user, get this book and you will be amazed at everything you will learn. You'll be working with Final Cut like a pro in no time. So happy I bought it.

Common core makes sense now!

This book is a keeper. I've never been good at math, but we're using this book for a class I'm taking, and it really helps. I'm finally making those connections and enjoying math. It helps that i also have a great teacher.

Using what I've learned, I easily taught my 7 yo multiplication. Its also easier to teach my older kids common core and help them with their homework.

Excellent Resource for Teaching...

This is an excellent resource for teachers or those, like myself, who are training to be teachers. The chapters are concise and clear in explanation and have the added bonus of a little comic relief in the form of famous syndicated cartoons in nearly each chapter. Also, this textbook provides answers to some end of chapter problems as well as small biographical entries on famous mathematicians who helped mold math as we know it. It gives clear instruction, and is challenging without being overwhelming. An excellent textbook!

Wonderful book

I bought this for my college class, and it's one book I don't plan on selling back anytime soon. It's highly informative, insightful and personal. I truly loved reading the compilation of these stories and it's certainly a resource. Book arrived on time, too.

The Gateway To Understanding Flash Photography

'Hot Shoe Diaries' is pure McNally and the best book I've ever read on flash photography. Two words: "buy it."

LONG VERSION:
Joe McNally's photo secrets were kicked out of the closet by the skeletons a long time ago. That's great news for those of us who have become infatuated (and infuriated) with the use of small flash units. Joe's latest book 'The Hot Shoe Diaries' is an exposé that tells all. There's never been a book on flash photography that covers the subject so thoroughly, so beautifully and so humorously. I'm certain that 'HSD' will reign as the undisputed champion on flash photography for a long time.

The first thing to know about 'HSD' is that even Joe has a hard time taking himself seriously. Joe repeatedly demonstrates his understanding of where he stands in the universe by filling 'HSD' with memorable photos - such as the self-portrait where he uses a chicken as a lightstand. Joe's humor is what sets 'HSD' apart from other photo books. It is what protects us from mind-numbing concepts, such as the "Inverse Square Law" (when did Congress pass that one anyway?).

Joe starts with the basics: gear, the fundamentals of digital photography and simple flash. He moves on to talk about one light shots. And two light shots. And lots-a-lights shots. He talks about where to put the lights and what to put between the lights and the subject. He shares a lifetime of stories. He inspires and encourages. Like I said, "pure McNally."

As with his first book, 'The Moment It Clicks', Joe fills the covers of 'HSD' with amazing and beautiful photos. These are the heart of 'HSD.' It's one thing to talk about flash photography. It's entirely another to demonstrate it again and again with stunning images. [Thanks also to the book designer who ran a good number of photos as double-trucks, aka: two-page spreads.]

'HSD' is for photographers of all levels - novice to expert. If you read 'Clicks' and were among the few disappointed because it wasn't a "how-to" book with lighting diagrams and such, 'HSD' is the book you were looking for. Plan on reading it again and again. I guarantee that every time you do, you'll pick up something new.

SPECIAL NOTE To Non-Nikon Shooters - 'HSD' Is Non-Denominational
It's no secret that Joe is a Nikon guy. Nikon terminology is used throughout the book. If you shoot something other than Nikon, think of it like an American talking to a Brit [if "elevator" = "lift", then "Auto FP" = "High-Speed Sync" and "Rear Curtain" = "2nd Curtain"]. Does this mean that 'HSD' is Nikon-specific? Absolutely not. As a lifelong Canon shooter, I've no hesitation in recommending this book to shooters of all denominations. The ideas and illustrations are universal.

I have been following Joe McNally via the Nikon DVDs featuring him and his incredible work. If you ever wanted to look right into the mind of this photographic genius and see how he thinks in regard to portable flash, this is the book for you.

In 25 years of photography both as a professional freelancer and full-time photographer, I have never learned as much in one sitting as I have from Joe McNally's new book. He goes in-depth and answers every question you could possibly have and then goes way beyond into exquisite (never boring) detail.

I have been a fan and follower of the Strobist techniques and have longed for a clear, detailed explanation of the concepts in one place. This book does that and then delivers far more.
