A very basic guide for novices

Take all the 5-star reviews with a grain of salt; anyone else notice how they read like sparkling advertisements and frequently fawn over the author? Or that they're all spelled/punctuated perfectly, and written by folks with no other reviews to their names? Just sayin!

Honestly, this is a decent reference for total novices. I'd suggest Adobe's Classroom In A Book for learning Dreamweaver from the ground up. Most of this info is super-easy to find online, and for free. That said, you can hardly argue with the price (as many of the previous "reviews" point out). For $13 you won't be kicking yourself, but you might roll your eyes at how rudimentary a lot of this info is.

Best Flash book I ever bought!

I must have over $1000 of Flash books since Flash 5. This book, by Shane Rebenschied, is by far the best I've experienced. I liked the fact that he includes much discussion about why one is performing a task one way as opposed to doing it another way... Shane shows you the correct, professional way. I also like the fact that the exact directions to follow in the tutorial are clearly numbered, often bold and stand out from the basic discussion. I am now going through for the second time and not reading the discussion but just doing another couple sites to get practice with these new techniques and ideas. They make sense because you change things in one place, not open every button timeline. You load one movie into another, allowing for download and cache ahead of time, for all your graphics and fonts you will use in the site. The user's computer is not constantly downloading the same items over and over as you move from one html page to another... you stay on the same one and load one SWF file after another into a master SWF file on the same html page.

If you already know a good deal about Flash or enough to get you in trouble, this Shane Rebenschied book is for you! I hope he writes the next level soon. The added videos are fantastic and very helpful.

Great for Professionals with Flash Experience

I highly recommend this book if you, like myself, are a professional in the media industry with experience in Flash. While the 'newbie' will benefit from this book, I find that knowing the terms, interface and minimal Actionscript syntax are very useful to understanding and succeeding with the tutorials in this book.

I searched high and low for this type of resource - a book which explains step by step how to do advanced actions in Flash utilizing semi-advanced explanations. In other words, the tutorials are written for both the newbie and intermediate user to understand. You don't have to be a developer to 'get' what the author is saying. Whoo-hoo!

Once I complete the exercises in this book, I am confident that I will be able to further my studies with more advanced Actionscript tutorials.

This is my first purchase of a Lynda.com H.O.T series and it certainly wil not be my last. Author Shane did an excellent job instructing the process of development and implementation of a functional Flash website. The assets are nicely done and Shane is great at balancing thorough explanations of what you are about to build, motivations to the approach, and mechanics of the steps and code involved. I consider myself an advanced Flash user but purchased this book when I noticed that several topics that I had neglected were covered: Shared libraries, external CSS, and MovieClipLoader.

The MovieClipLoader coverage and it's event handling advantages place much greater capabilities in readers hands and at the intermediate rather than advanced level. This is due to the projects, the explanations, and the discussion of the rationale.

ActionScript is strictly typed throughout the book although the functions, curiously, are not. External dynamic data is emphasized and although the solutions are not always the most efficient, comprehension is the focus. I also thought that supplying a few Quicktime movies as additional walkthroughs to a few more advanced topics was an interesting solution.

I recommend the book for those hungry for additional Flash knowledge. The design of the book (all color screen caps) and the author's friendly, enthusiastic writing style was engaging. Good procedure oriented projects.

About the Author

Literature Association, and has written widely on world literature from antiquity to the present. His books include What Is World Literature? (2003), The Buried Book: The Loss and Rediscovery of the Great Epic of Gilgamesh (2007), and How to Read World Literature (2009). He is the founding general editor of the six-volume Longman Anthology of World Literature, 2/e (2009) and the editor of Teaching World Literature (2009).

 

Kevin J. H. Dettmar is W. M. Keck Professor and Chair, Department of English, at Pomona College, and Past President of the Modernist Studies Association.  He is the author of The Illicit Joyce of Postmodernism and Is Rock Dead?, and the editor of Rereading the New: A Backward Glance at Modernism; Marketing Modernisms: Self-Promotion, Canonization, and Rereading; Reading Rock & Roll: Authenticity, Appropriation, Aesthetics; the Barnes & Noble Classics edition of James Joyce’s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Dubliners; and The Blackwell Companion to Modernist Literature and Culture, and co-general editor of The Longman Anthology of British Literature.     

 

Stuart Sherman is Associate Professor of English at Fordham University. He received the Gottschalk Prize from the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies for his book Telling Time: Clocks, Diaries, and English Diurnal Form, 1660-1775, and is currently at work on a study called “News and Plays: Evanescences of Page and Stage, 1620-1779.” He has received the Quantrell Award for Undergraduate Teaching, as well as fellowships from the American Council of Learned Societies, the Chicago Humanities Institute, and Princeton University.

Understanding Photoshop ... exactly

This is by far the best Photoshop book I have come across for beginners. As the description states: "teaches you the fundamental digital imaging techniques" ... "many Photoshop books focus on features, tools, or techniques, this book covers both the basics and delves into specific skills, tricks, and uses" ... "in a friendly style" ... "with a DVD-ROM" (excellent companion to book). In my humble opinion, that is exactly what it delivers. In fact, I was impressed with this book for those beginning in Photoshop as it delivers the key core skills (regardless of software version) needed to develop as a Photoshop buffin, that it is now one of the core books we provide our students at the start of their graphic design course. Highly, highly recommend it.

I am enjoying the book very much. I especially like the CD as it contains a lot of hours of additional training. The book is easy to use and full of interesting information. I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to learn the nuts and bolt of Photoshop.

I have found this book to be very easy to understand. The DVD is a great companion, showing exactly how to do certain things in Photoshop. I am a college instructor and this is one of the sources I use to teach my students the ins and outs of the program.

One of the best and most useful Photoshop books!

I'd had this book saved on my Wishlist for many months but I put off buying it because of that first review (I've been burned by Photoshop books before). The person who wrote that review must be on some serious medications because this book is worth every penny.

Working with Photoshop channels was always a very intimidating task. I'd played around with them, but never seemed to make things happen as I wanted them to happen. Not anymore.

I'm just about through this book, and while I won't claim I'd be able to explain to anyone else how channels work, I can damn-sure claim to know how to use them.

Also,if you're tired of spending hours in quick mask mode, you need to buy this book. You'll not only make masks in a fraction of the time, you'll make better masks.... no, that's wrong, you'll make GREAT masks.

I'm kicking myself for letting that first review make me put off this purchase for so long. This book is trememdous!

A solid grounding in the use of channels

Scott's style of writing in this book becomes a little overbearing at times, as he tries to be amusing at every turn of the page. That makes it rather hard to read the book a second time to review things one may have forgotten.

Having said that, Scott doesn't write as if the reader is an imbecile, and the pace of the book is good. Scott clearly explains each step required to use channels and if you follow along you are amazed at the end of an exercise how much you have accomplished in a short space of time.

Because of the large number of screen shots, the book can be easily read without sitting in front of the computer, which is handy if you want to read it on the plane or over a beer at the pub.

I therefore recommend the book for people with a variety of skills in the use of Photoshop. That ranges from anyone who knows what a layer is through to an advanced user.

Reasonably informative about a neglected subject

Channels are an important, if very under-reported, aspect of Photoshop. Channel manipulation is the key to much of the power of Photoshop, but it can be an intimidating subject. The early masterwork was "Photoshop Channel Chops" by David Biedny, Bert Monroy, and Nathan Moody, which is long out of print.

Kelby does here what he does most of the time in his books. He collects tips and techniques from various sources and cleans up the presentation. He is a good technical writer, able to translate what might be too technical for most readers, into plain English. Unfortunately, he also thinks he is a comedian. For some reason, many writers about Photoshop think they are funny: they are not. The attempted humor is banal and a distraction. But perhaps these futile attempts at comedy are a reaction to the dread so many people bring to learning Photoshop. In any event, it would be nice if Kelby and cohorts would recognize that they are not stand-up comics.

Much of what Kelby covers is fairly basic: but that's good. You have to start with the basics to learn the complex power of Photoshop. If there's a fault, it's that Kelby never goes too deeply into any subject. These are just hints, tips and techniques that scratch the surface. Yes, Kelby over-promises and under-delivers. On the other hand, he does offer a sugar-coated way for people to learn about various aspects of Photoshop.

One thing I could do without in this or any Kelby book is the relentless promotion of Kelby's little empire of Photoshop entities, such as his National Association of Photoshop Professionals, his seminars, his other books, his friend's books and products. This braggadocio gets old fast.

Since Photoshop Channel Chops is long out of print, Kelby's volume does fill a need and fills it reasonably well.

Once Over Lightly

Because digital cameras offer special advantages to photographers under nighttime conditions and because Photoshop offers nighttime photographers a broad array of tools that can overcome many of the inherent problems of nighttime photography, there has been a need for a book like this.

The author begins his book by discussing some of the basic components of nighttime photography, including cameras, computers and Adobe Photoshop. Carruci next deals with actual photography techniques like composition, exposure and artificial light sources, and photographing people. He next discusses special effects, both with the camera and in Photoshop. He then provides a step by step presentation of three projects that involve compositing, and finishes up by describing Photoshop presentation tools.

Carucci's writing style is quite good, making the book a pleasure to read. Unfortunately this helps to conceal the fact that there is not much actual meat on the bone. The book is aimed at intermediate photographers, so one has to have knowledge of both photography and Photoshop to really understand what is being discussed. There are lessons to be learned here, like shooting at twilight will render a blue sky rather than the black sky one would get by shooting later, or that one can balance flash with ambient light to avoid the problems of flash fall off.

However, other than some useful rules of thumb, most of the book seems superficial. The discussions of Photoshop tools seem like a catalog of capabilities without revealing how to best use the capabilities for nighttime photography. For example, the author acknowledges the fact that it is difficult to meter night subjects because of the presence of both darkness and spots of light. He offers no suggestions on how to overcome the problem, such as by averaging the readings, or determining what is important in the picture and setting the exposure for that, or just extensive bracket shooting and later sorting the results.

In the presentation chapter, he lists the different kinds of paper stock available for prints, but makes no suggestions of the factors that might lead to the selection of one or the other. In the discussion of the Photoshop refine edges function, he tells you what settings to use in processing a particular picture, but offers no explanation of why these settings were used.

There is a lengthy discussion of the use of the type tool that is unrelated to nighttime photography.

The book uses Adobe Camera Raw 4.0 rather than the newer version of that Photoshop plug-in.

Photos were available for download from the publisher's web site, after registering the book, which allowed the reader to follow along with the description of Photoshop processing.

Readers familiar with digital photography and Photoshop may well pick up a few useful tips from this book, but this is not the definitive work on digital nighttime photography.

Worst Photoshop Book I Have Ever Purchased

In my opinion, this book is a total waste of time. I have been working with Photoshop since version 5 and I have, over the years, purchased at least 40 Photoshop related books. Of all of the books I have purchased, this one rates as the worst. It is not poorly written and the photographs are for the most part very professional. However, it purports to be a book about the particular challenges of night photography and the usefulness of Photoshop CS3 in those circumstances. After reading this book, I was able to conclude that I can obtain all of the useful information in this book, plus a great deal more, by using either Scott Kelby's book (The Adobe Photoshop CS3 Book for Digital Photographers) or Martin Evening's book (Adobe Photoshop CS3 for Photographers), both of which are aimed at digital photographers. This is the first review of a book I have done, but I didn't want others to unnecessarily spend money to buy this book, only to find that it has almost nothing to do with night photography. You don't need to buy this book to know that you need a tripod to take long exposures. As for the information about cameras and storage media, it is available for free on the internet. Most of the rest of the book gives very superficial treatment of curves, layers, selections, etc., all of which are covered more succinctly and in more depth in the Kelby and Evening books. I have never been more disappointed in a Photoshop book than this one.

A Truly Unique Book

Night photography is such a random art form, that you never know what you're gonna get every time you attempt to take a picture. Part of this problem was a lack of understanding on my part as to why night photographs turn out the way they do. Carucci makes it simple with this book by explaining all of the conditions that influence the night photograph.

It's one of the few night photography books that I've seen, and certainly the most applicable in the digital age.

Carucci addresses various available light situations by explaining both the photography and Photoshop aspects. I found this approach unique -- since it seems that most books out there concentrate on one or the other - yet both are necessary to be successful.

Carucci's writing style is clear and concise, and his examples are stellar. Not only do you learn how to take a night photograph and enhance it in Photoshop, but he also provides lessons at the end of each chapter that reiterate what was discussed while at the same time introducing new techniques. One project on perspective control takes you on a step-by-step lesson to fixing a tilted building, but then it includes a simple effect to intensify the twilight sky. It's those little touches that separate this book from the others.

While the book doesn't come with any extras (CD, DVD) the project images are downloadable over the web. If I have one criticism for this book, it's that some of the pictures could be bigger. But being that this is a technique book, and not a monograph, it's something I could live with.
