ugh! 3 stars

this book is fine for learning the material, but it's weaknesses are sooo annoying that i had to detract 2 stars from my rating. here's why:
1/2 star deduction - this book gushes about dreamweaver. you enjoy his enthusiasm in the first 4 chapters. you're just rolling your eyes after that.
1/2 star deduction - this book gives you one way of doing things for windows, and in the same sentence the equivalent way of doing it for the mac.
1/2 star deduction - the book is so repetitive with its 'helpful' hints. for example, "you should still have the draft.html file from the previous exercise open. if not, complete exercise 3, and then return to this exercise".
1/2 star deduction - this book treats you like a 5 year old. he tells you to "remember" that you were styling text before (as in the directly preceding exercise), but you'll now be styling an image. DUH!
any one of these things isn't so bad in itself. but when he does ALL THESE THINGS ALL THE TIME THROUGHOUT THE BOOK NONSTOP, it gets VERY irritating! plus, these weaknesses made performing a tedious task (reading a TRAINING book) unnecessarily more tiresome!
like i said, you do end up learning dreamweaver. but i would venture to suggest that you could have done it in (dare i say it?) 1/2 the time.

Very useful for me.

I started with a begin knowledge of HTML but no other experience. I reviewed many texts at local book stores that teach Dreamweaver CS3 before purchasing four which appeared most useful. Dreamweaver CS3 by Garrick Chow is the best I've found; it is concrete in presentation with clear, step-by-step descriptions. The graphes and charts are both informative and user friendly. I think I am a slow learner because I can not do something only once and understand it ~ so, I copied the lessons from the instruction CD three times {as Chapter 3"a"; Chapter 3"b"; Chapter 3"c"} which allows me to complete each lesson several times so that I can really learn the lessons from each chapter. Each chapter is nicely segmented into logically combined content. Unlike other "How To... Dreamweaver" text books which seem to present only a number of "steps", Chow's book teaches me the larger picture of "What, How & Why" each step is important for ME to understand, to learn and to use Dreamweaver CS3.

Great book

I read many reviews of many books before I bought this one. This was a great choice. The exercises provide hands-on practice to see how elements of the program work rather than just reading about them. It doesn't go into great detail explaining the theory behind the workings - there are plenty of other books for that, ie. the Dreamweaver Bible. Everything is presented in a straightforward manner. Great for a beginner, like me. This isn't a book for someone who is already a seasoned web designer. It is meant to get the novice up and running with the program. It also has additional training videos on the CD and a 24hr access to Lynda.com - a great site for finding training of all sorts.
