About the Author
Leslie Taggart has developed more than one hundred college textbooks in the disciplines of college reading, developmental writing, first-year composition, linguistics, literature, and study skills, mostly as a freelance editor. She has contributed chapters to college textbooks in the fields of English as a Second Language, literature, and rhetoric, co-authored an edition of a developmental writing text, and revised several texts, including two handbooks and a fivebook composition series. Leslie has taught English as a second language at the high school level, and English as a foreign language at an agricultural college in China. She has been a volunteer literacy tutor and spent two years tutoring in the Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program. Leslie earned the Master Practitioner certificate in Neuro-Linguistic Programming from the New England Institute of NLP.

An extremely helpful and concise review / re-learning text.

As a non-traditional student of 35 returning to undergraduate university, I had tested into Calculus but as the semester progressed, it bacame apparent that the intervening years had taken their toll on my math basics. It was clear that even as I struggled to understand the new material, I had either forgotten my basics or never learned them well. This lack was seriously impeding learning the new material. I finally took a review course with this book, re-took the calculus, graduated cum laude, went on for Masters degrees, and am now working on my doctorate. This book cut through all the "math-ese" to understanding the basics of the calculations, not just regurgitating the material. The authors also seem to be able to focus on exactly where people routinely have problems in a very understandable language. It is not an exaggeration to say a single book can be pivotal in one's success.

If you want to understand algebra and/or trig, buy this book

As an unchallenged high school student 30 years ago, I never really put much effort into either algebra or trig and still managed to ace my tests. This lack of a rigorous algebraic and trigonometric foundation killed me in subsequent college calculus courses. This book fixed that problem, 30 years later! If you are looking for a book to challenge a motivated high school student, this is the book. I loaned it to one such student after I finished it and she very quickly completed a year and a half of high school algebra and trig in one summer and went on to ace honors calculus that fall.
For myself, I picked up this book several years ago and started my math re-education. There are numerous margin exercises that are to be completed immediately after a new concept is introduced in a section plus 50-70 section end exercises. These exercises directly reinforce what you have just studied. There are numerous sections in each chapter. This layout is really nice because as a self study, it normally took me several days to complete a chapter and if I had to wait to do exercises at the end of each chapter, I am positive my retention would have been much lower and my frustration higher, leading to a consequent lowering of motivation. Fortunately, just the opposite happened with this book. Every time I completed a section I was motivated to learn more which reduced the time required to complete each chapter. Finally each chapter has a chapter review then a comprehensive chapter test. If you miss a question in the chapter review, the answer section point to the relevant section for review.
Every margin, chapter review and chapter test exercise has the answer in the back of the book. The section-end exercises have only odd answers in the back of the book, but this is not a significant problem. I noticed several things about these exercises at the end of each section. The exercises are not just "make work" but increasingly challenge the reader. The exercises are such that they catch and expose deficiencies in math manipulation skills. If you are weak in some area of algebraic manipulation, it becomes readily apparent in the exercises. The even numbered exercises are variations on the odd numbered exercises. If you can do the odd exercises, you'll be able to do the even exercises and so not require the answers in the back. If you messed up the odd exercise and understand the nature of the mistake, you can still do the even numbered exercise with confidence.
The Trig section is short (3 chapters) and dense. Again problems are uniformly excellent. The chapter on trigonometric identities makes the book worth its price by itself and pays off handsomely when studying calculus and you are attempting to solve integrals via trigonometric substitution. There are three additional chapters introducing linear algebra, conic sections and sequences.
The book makes use of decent artwork and has technology sections utilizing graphing calculators, but is comprehensive without having such a calculator. Despite the hefty cost for a large format paperback, this book is definitely worth it. The binding has proven to be extremely durable. I just wish I had this book so many years ago. My college math courses would have been so much more enlightening.

A GREAT textbook for the math-phobic

I bought this book to help me in a college algebra course, and I cannot begin to tell you how useful it has been. This book has exquisitely clear examples and each problem is worked in a step-by-step fashion that ensures that you will not only know HOW to get the correct answer, but allows you to thoroughly understand just how you derived it. I am so happy with this book that I've recommended that it be used in my university college algebra courses....it's that good!!

The field of ad hoc networking is reemerging amid unprecedented growth in the scale and diversity of computer networking. New horizons for wireless connectivity have come into view along with a new sense of the inevitability of wireless data transmission over IP, the Internet Protocol that patches the Internet together. With new wireless products and research have come a more widespread familiarity between network protocol engineers and wireless media and some recognition that wireless media are almost as good as wired media for transmitting data--as long as one can overlook the differences in transmission speed. Almost--or perhaps even better--because of the dramatically greater convenience promised by mobile computing.

Unfortunately, there is another reason that mobile computing is often not truly as convenient as conventional computing. The Internet cannot yet handle mobile computers very well. Although this situation is changing quickly, almost no one would disagree that a fixed computer with wired media offers a better computing and communications environment than a mobile wireless computer--even more so for PDAs. The task set before today's network engineers is to eliminate the shortcomings of mobile computers and wireless media so that the inherent convenience of mobility will no longer suffer the burden of inadequate or inappropriate system design.

Part of the inadequacy of current system design starts with the outdated assumptions made in the network and routing protocols deployed in the Internet today. Many efforts to repair these outdated assumptions rely on additional infrastructure elements for managing data related to mobile computers--for example, Mobile IP--and various proxy architectures. These efforts and others offer new design perspectives that either preserve the time-honored end-to-end model of Internet communications or that offer new models aimed at improving user experience.

Perhaps naturally, the wide deployment of the Internet has provided additional impetus for exploring the benefits of computer internetworking even for situations in which neither the Internet per se nor any other internetwork is reachable. In such situations, one might still wish to use familiar network programs to carry on the same kinds of interactive computing with neighbors and associates in the area. Network programs can typically continue to work as long as they can identify the IP address of the desired destination and a path of one or more network links toward the destination.

Finding such paths is the job of ad hoc network algorithms and protocols. Exploring that design space has been an increasingly active area of research in the last few years. It is our hope that the diverse algorithms and protocols described in this book will give the reader a good idea of the current state of the art in ad hoc networking. The authors of each chapter are among the foremost practitioners in the field, and each one will no doubt try to convince the reader that his or her approach is best. Patience will be rewarded

The opaque style of some of the writing may indeed be off-putting to the less educated reader, but that's not the target audience. The target audience consists of trained professionals who are already working in related areas, who want to see "what's going on" in a hot field.
This is neither a primer nor a reference, but rather a survey of current practice. It's a source of ideas and inspiration, not canned answers. If you're looking for a book with the narrative flow of a novel, that will take you from total ignorance to mastery of the field, this is not the book for you. To get the most out of it, you must be willing (and able) to evaluate the ideas presented and determine for yourself how they fit in with your own needs and goals. The protocols presented were not all designed for the same needs - node counts, degrees of mobility and reliability, etc. All of them probably contain some flaw or other; this is in fact logically necessary because sometimes the chapter authors flatly contradict one another. However, a protocol that contains three flaws might nonetheless contain seven other good ideas.
This is a challenging book. Professionals and (advanced, probably graduate level) students who rise to the challenge and invest some of their own thought in the reading process will get a lot out of it, as I and others have done. Less advanced readers, or those who hope to learn by passive absorption, might be disappointed.

State of the Art in wireless ad hoc networking

Although the editor did not make a serious effort to transform the different protocols into a coherent set of chapters, the book is still the best out there that explains the main concepts of ad hoc networking protocol design. I will use it in my class, although it requires a lot of background and it will be for graduate research students.
It is not a text book. But it is a very valuable book for researchers and networking engineers interested in this field.
The authors (not editor) present some of their best and most valuable contribution to this field. Without those protocols it is quite hard to understand the design trade-offs in this new and emerging field of ad hoc networks. You get first hand explanations from Johnson, Perkins, J.J. Garcia, Haas, and others that are top researchers in this field (you have to be in this field to appreciate them). It is much better than C.K.Toh's book (who is focused on his own work and doesn't provide a larger, big picture, view of others protocol designs). I hope the next edition will incorportate some serious editing though I like it as a starting research point as is.

A must-read

I gave this book four stars because some of the chapters are written in an unnecessarily dry, opaque, academic style. However, that's not what's important. While it's not for everyone, there are many people who I feel *MUST READ* this book. It deals with protocols, particularly routing protocols, developed for use in a very challenging environment, where nodes come and go and move frequently, where connections never last, etc. A lot of what has been learned from studying this environment can be used to improve the less-dynamic Internet itself. A lot of it, in fact, represents a return to the Internet's roots, when the intent was to be more fully decentralized, thus more robust and also more "democratic".
There's a particularly important message in this book for peer-to-peer (P2P) developers. Many of the protocols described in this book, many of the problems found and overcome with/by those protocols, are *exactly* the same problems as those P2P developers are now facing and struggling with. Well, guys, you don't have to go it alone. This book proves that there is technology already out there that can help you, and before you go reinventing (inferior) wheels, *READ THIS BOOK*. Put down that hundredth book you're reading about crypto, and learn something about the state of the art in routing.

About the Author

Robert L. Smith holds a B.S. in Animal Science, an M.S. in Wildlife Biology along with a Ph.D. in Wildlife Biology from Cornell University. Currently, he is a professor of Ecology at West Virginia University. He has spent over 30 years teaching Ecology and conducting field research throughout the world.

His teaching responsibilities have involved mostly undergraduate courses in general ecology and graduate courses in population ecology and wildlife management. His research has included forest-fire related problems in southern West Virginia, vegetational development and succession on abandoned and reclaimed surface mines, the relation between forest vegetational structure and the forest bird community, and forest habitat assessment and habitat evaluation procedures based on vegetational structure.

Smith has served as a consultant to congressional committees, workshops on environmental education and energy and environmental problems, the National Landmarks program of the U.S. Department of Interior, National Research Council Task Forces on wildlife and fisheries issues and ecological classification systems for implementing environmental quality evaluation procedures. He is the author of numerous articles and reviews as well as the author of three ecology texts: Ecology and Field Biology, Elements of Ecology and Ecology of Man: An Ecosystem Approach, Harper and Row, New York.

About the Author
Bob Blitzer is a native of Manhattan and received a Bachelor of Arts degree with dual majors in mathematics and psychology (minor: English literature) from the City College of New York. His unusual combination of academic interests led him toward a Master of Arts in mathematics from the University of Miami and a doctorate in behavioral sciences from Nova University. Bob is most energized by teaching mathematics and has taught a variety of mathematics courses at Miami-Dade College for nearly 30 years. He has received numerous teaching awards, including Innovator of the Year from the League for Innovations in the Community College, and was among the first group of recipients at Miami-Dade College for an endowed chair based on excellence in the classroom. This highly useful, detailed guide helps desktop-publishing and other design professionals produce the best possible scans and halftones from their images. The first section focuses on scanning, first featuring explanations of such terms as spi (samples per inch), bit depth, optical and interpolated resolution, and dynamic range. The authors even advise you on buying and cleaning scanners. Next they detail the elements of good scans and how to fix less-than-perfect ones, helping you figure out what sort of file formats and resolutions to use in your work, how to do tonal and color corrections, and how to sharpen and compress images. Finally, the discussion turns to Web and printer output and to OCR technology and PhotoCD images.

The section on halftones teaches you how to produce decent halftone images, first by explaining how halftones work and then by explaining such issues as frequency, gray levels, spot variation, spot gain, spot shapes, and the role of printers and software in creating halftones. There's also a discussion of stochastic screening and how to create blends and reduce moiré and other patterns. The last chapters here help you fine-tune your halftone settings and learn a bit about PostScript operators for halftones and scanning.

The third and last section focuses on using image applications to work with scans, tonal and color corrections, and halftones. Newly revised and updated for the modern era, Real World Scanning and Halftones, Second Edition is better than everand that's good! David Blatner, Glenn Fleishman and Steve Roth have taken a great book and made it even better. When Real World Scanning and Halftones (the first edition) was published back in 1993, it was focused primarily on scanning and printing grayscale images, since at that time there weren't that many people doing a lot of color work on the desktop. Nowadays, of course, just about every color image you see in print (and all you see online) has been processed digitally -- and probably in Photoshop. So the Second Edition covers desktop color in much more detail, as well as adding sections on web graphics, output to todays color printers, stochastic screening, and other contemporary technologies.

The materials covered address the things that every Photoshop user (and everyone else working with digital images) needs to know. That includes some things that you would expect, plus some welcome surprises: for example, how to get decent output from today's inexpensive inkjet printersthis is information which you will be hard-pressed to find elsewhere; most neophytes who buy a non-PostScript inkjet printer (can you say Epson?) don't realize that they're not based on the traditional CMYK print model.....but 100 years of printing technologies -- as well as the digital advances of more recent years -- typically assume that you are printing to a CMYK device. So if you've got an RGB printer, or something that uses it very own proprietary six-color process (can you say Epson?), in some respects you are in deep, uncharted waters, where many things that are usually taken for granted may no longer apply. You'll find useful information on this and other modern digital conundrums in this book.

The material covered applies to anyone working with digital images -- and if you're working in Photoshop, that's you, regardless of whether you use a Mac or a Wintel PC. There's no CD, but the book does have an associated web site. I'd call this a "Try it."

Frequently, I find that I have to buy books that are overly technical for my purposes in order to get all the info I want. This book suits me, (though it may not suit the needs of a graphics profession). There are no buyer's guides to specific models of scanners here. However, there is a lot of detail about how scanners, scanning software and graphics programs work. The authors provide such arcana as the formula for determining what size a scanned image will be (depending on the options you pick) and goodies like this. There is info on file formats, compression, how to choose resolution and what influences the outcome of scans and how to correct the result. There is also a lot of information most applicable to professional print work, for which I have no particular use, except that info of this type helps to fill out my picture of how digital imaging works. If you want suggestions for scanning projects to do with your kids, look elsewhere, but if you're interested in the theory of scanners I would recommend this book. I'll also mention that, in my view, the writing is clear and well-organized and if I occasionally must pause to consider it's only because the material requires a little thought. This is not rocket science, but neither is it Sponge Bob and the authors treat it accordingly.

He explains not only the how-to of photo manipulation but when to do it and why. Provides good explanation of much of the terminology that gets thrown around but generally not explained well.

No Better Introduction to Graphic Arts

I am a Vice President of Graphic Services for one of the largest ad agencies in the world. I can't recommend this book highly enough for anyone starting a study of scanning and image processing (Photoshop...). I frequently find that if my retouchers are having problems they haven't read this. It's a must.

This Is a very nice book. Much nicer than I expected. And to make it even better....It was a hundred dollars cheaper than the hardback. I would definately buy from them again. It even arrived super quick. I was very suprised.

Helpful Textbook

This is a good book for those that are just getting their feet wet with Algebra. It has good examples and explantions and the Test Prep CD is a big help.

The book is ok, but the math labs is a better product.

I bought this book for my elementary algebra class and about half our work comes from problems in the book. The other half comes from problems using the MyMathlabs software. I feel like we need one or the other, not both. It is clumsy having to use the book to work half of my homework, when the homework online has better examples and explains the work much better. I feel like it is a ploy to sell a book at an insane price instead of just maintaining an online class program. Unfortunatly I will be unable to sell the mymathlabs part of the book back on Amazon, so I am not going to be able to recoup a good portion of the money spent on this book.
