About the Author
Claire McEachern is Professor of English at the University of California, Los Angeles. Her other editions of Shakespeare include the Arden 3 edition of Much Ado About Nothing (2006); 1&2 Henry IV, Henry V, King John and All's Well that Ends Well (Pelican, 2001). She is also the author or editor of the Cambridge Companion to Shakespearean Tragedy (CUP, 2004); Religion and Culture in the English Renaissance (CUP, 1997), and The Poetics of English Nationhood, 1590-1612 (CUP, 2006).

Great contexts, no criticism or commentary

I loved the Longman Cultural Edition of "Pride and Prejudice"--in fact, it's the best edition I know of. I was all set for just as great an edition of King Lear, but I have to admit I'm disappointed. The notes to the text are a bit more helpful than most editions of Shakespeare, so that's fine. The documents given as context were great, far more extensive than most editions, comparable to what you would expect from a Norton Critical Edition (I think there is no NCE Lear).
The problem I have is that, aside from a brief and cursory introduction, there are no critical or interpretive essays. Why not a little Johnson or Frye or Bloom? Nothing on the debate over "Look, her lips. / Look there, look there. (He dies.)" I think high school, undergraduate, and casual adult readers need and enjoy that more than contextual documents. Perhaps this edition is suited to graduate students.
In the end, I prefer the Signet Classics edition, as I do for most of Shakespeare, for most purposes.
BTW, let me recommend some fine material on Shakespeare, for either students or adults reading for pleasure. Of course you should not miss Harold Bloom's "Shakespeare: The Invention of the Human," though Bloom is as idiosyncratic as ever. For excellent, more down-to-earth commentary, I love Marjorie Garber's "Shakespeare After All." And for fun, don't miss Ron Rosenbaum's entertaining, true-crime-ish "The Shakespeare Wars."
(King Lear itself, if you are looking for a review of the play, is my favorite Shakespeare. I cannot think of higher praise than the fact that Shakespeare's ending was not performed for 150 years, because it was too horrifying, too heart-breaking. I love the interactions between the parallel plots, the religious implications of the work. Philosophically, I think it's richer than Hamlet.)
