Fantastic discussion of UI development for WinForms projects

The one quality that makes this book a clear winner is the quality of the content and clarity of author Rebecca Riordan's writing. She uses a friendly, humorous, often bitingly sarcastic voice that eases the normal tension accompanying such a complex topic as UI design for Windows applications with .NET technologies. You'll appreciate this tone as Riordan takes you through some very challenging scenarios in developing winning desktop apps.

The main focus is on presentation tier technologies and techniques used to create great programs that customers will really enjoy using. The book starts out with five phenomenally-written chapters on GDI+, typography, color, and image programming that every developer working with .NET should read, whether they're examining UI design for desktop applications, or otherwise. It also includes a helpful glossary of development terms mentioned throughout the text that you'll enjoy and refer to often.

Riordan also attempts to demystify the many complexities of .NET databinding within Windows Forms. as do most Addison-Wesley texts, the book's physical properties are to be appreciated, using sturdy binding and thick paper, making the book close and sit easily after a session open on your lap (and who hasn't wrecked at least book doing so?).

The only downside to this book (and a minor one at that) is the exclusive presentation of code in Visual Basic .NET, which would make the book largely one-dimensional to programmers working with that language (or liberal minded C# readers). But programming language semantics aside, this is a real gem, and one you'll want to pickup for your WinForms team projects.

UI with complex SQL data

A formidably detailed and comprehensive attack on the problem of user interfaces and data visualisation. Riordan tackles this in the context of Microsoft's .NET platform. Notice the two topics. There are books on pure UI design, for various operating systems. Nothing wrong with that. But they tend to concentrate on the strict visuals and how the user interacts with various widgets. Usually, any data to be displayed or modified is general and lacks much structure.

There are certainly elements of this approach here. Like where Riordan discusses the various properties of fonts and faces, or colours or different image types.

But she goes further. She shows how to make UIs customised for SQL data. To make your SQL Server easily accessible. A full workout. From using the widget families that come with .NET and hooking these all the way back to a SQL Server. In, for example, a four tier architecture. Unusual to see all this in one book. PLus, she makes VB seem very easy to design and program in.

A Great Book for Windows Forms Developers.

Seeing Data: Designing User Interfaces for Database Systems Using .NET is an amazing book for anyone designing a user interface (UI) to allow users to display and edit data. It is very specifically focused on .NET WinForms development, however much of the information is useful for all developers.

Starting with coverage of the basics, like fonts, colors, etc., the book moves on to how to display and allow proper editing of various data types. This is very much a needed book, since the Microsoft User Interface standards book has not been updated since 1999. A lot has happened since 1999 in the Microsoft world, and the advice Rebecca offers comes from a lot of hard-won experience.

I do not do a great deal of Windows Forms development, but when I do, I will keep this book nearby.

Very handy

This book was recommended for my Precalc class and since it was over $100 cheaper here than through my school I figured "why not?". It was the right choice, this comes in super handy when doing practice problems and homework from the book and has helped me figure out what I was doing wrong many times. I think it's worth it.

Photoshop Elements another helpful book guide by Scott Kelby

I bought the Elements Book to help me while I work with Elements while I am making corrections and changes to the photography I have shot. Scott Kelby is a pro and his books are very easy to understand with step by step instructions. I have purchased other Photoshop books by him and his books come highly recommended by photofinishers and professors. I bought his book on those recommendations and find this book to be very helpful. I recommend it to photographers who are working with Photoshop Elements.

Quick start guide for amateurs, yet advanced for growth

I've worn out the library copy of Kelby's previous Photoshop Elements 3 book, so when this version came out, I bought it immediately.

Photoshop Elements is a photography buff's dream come true. However, because the software is feature-rich, it also has a steep learning curve. Kelby's previous book got me started in a jif, and had me working with the techniques pros use. This book is no exception.

For those of you who have not seen the inside of Kelby's 400+ page book, each of the pages is done in full color graphics, with a glossy finish. Instructions are given in steps, with most techniques using only a few steps, and some techniques going into the high teens. Thus far, I've found that I've been able to follow each one I've tried.

The techniques Kelby outlines are useful and not difficult once he's shown you how. In particular, I like his section on working with faces, as most of my photographs are of people. Other valuable sections include keystoning, color correction and selection (layer) techniques.

For background, I'm a photographer wannabe, but realistically a full-time white-collar worker. I find time to work with images about two hours a week, so I like to do it as efficiently as I can. This book has been invaluable to that task.

A Service Manual for Digital Photographs

This is one heck of an amazing book. Here is why: I got it today and about 20 minutes later fired up my Trial Photoshop Elements program (13 days still remaining on the trial but it will be included with my Epson Scanner still coming from Amazon.com). Then I turned to a random page in the middle of the book and read the steps for color correction. I needed a picture so I picked some random picture from my library to experiment on (mind you, I never really thought anything needed fixing on this picture...always looked good to me). Then I began with the steps. Everything was easy to follow. The book provides picture samples to help you along and the author instructions are clear and sometimes dotted with humor. I learned and used features/tools I never knew existed in Photoshop Elements. Anyway, by the end of steps I looked with amazement at my picture. It just looked so much better then before, but to be sure I decided to cancel the changes made via the steps in the book. Oh my goodness, my original picture was all wrong. It was terribly red cast as the book explains. Man, I have no idea what these steps I performed in 5 minutes did but it completely changed my picture for the better.

Totally amazed, I just randomly picked some other page and then performed the steps to implement fill flash on a face when fill flash wasn't used. Holy Moly! Now this is almost magical. Within 2 minutes I'm using a brush to paint a "flash". I don't even know how all this is happening nor do I care, I just know I have the tools (Photoshop Elements and the steps in this book) to perform what seems like magic on my pictures.

Mr. Kelby has written an interesting book, indeed. It is sort of like an automotive service manual which just lists steps to change your brake pads without actually explaining the principles behind braking (and I am still not sure why I have to put that funny blue paste like thing on my brake pads when I change them). From what I can tell so far, this book is similar in that it includes steps to fix common picture problems such as color correction, adding a fill flash when it wasn't used, etc. without actually explaining why. For now, it is all I need. Maybe if my interest continues, I may purchase other books on Photoshop Elements to learn more that powerful program.

Not as good as others in the series

I was disappointed by this entry to the 'Classroom In A Book' series. I've used other members of the series, and I have generally found them to be a relatively quick and inexpensive way to climb up the learning curve for Adobe products.
Most of what the book teaches comes under the heading of 'Video Editing 101'-- what's a ripple edit, how do I lift frames, and so on. I can find most of this stuff pretty quickly in the User's Manual.
There is a lot of repetitive material in this book. I counted a half-dozen places where the book shows how to remove a gap in the timeline, even though it's a simple procedure.
Intermediate topics of the sort that I had hoped to find get less attention. Color correction only gets part of one chapter, and there's virtually nothing on Premiere's waveform monitor and vectorscope beyond how to open them. I'd really like to know how to read and use them!
Premiere's audio capabilities get their own chapter, but the Lesson on the CD-ROM doesn't match the chapter in the book. There were at least a half-dozen files needed by the chapter's project that Premiere couldn't find on the CD, rendering the chapter all but unusable.
When Premiere Pro comes out, I hope Adobe goes back to the drawing board on this volume. It needs a lot of work.

Good for first timers but watch for errors!

As a first time user of Adobe Premiere I'm glad I bought this book because it certainly shows a lot of features and how to use them. However!!! There are several errors and OBTW I'm only through Lesson 5 of 14.
Another complaint I have about the book is that in many cases it could be improved if the authors would tell you why you are doing a certain thing. In many cases they do but in many others they don't. By leaving out an explanation of the reason you are doing a certain action it makes it difficult to apply steps to future videos you want to create.
It would be very nice if Adobe or Adobe Press would have a place to go to discuss or ask questions about the lessons in the book so you could get feedback from either them or from other users.
This is an almost great tutorial if they could eliminate the errors or refer you to a website where you could get an up to date list of corrections before you start using it.
The bottom line: I'm glad I bought it. I will finish it and I will keep it for reference, but I'm making notes as I go along on all the errors I find so I don't repeat them when I refer back later.

Great to Learn the program

I rarely use books to learn because I typically am unable to learn in this manner. I purchased this as well as several other of the Classroom In A Book series for Adobe products.

I had never used any previous version of Premiere and I was able to edit my own videos after completing a few lessons. I stopped following the lessons after lesson 7 but that was due to my own impatience to work on my own projects and not the book.

4-star rating instead of 5 is due to my constant complaint about a book meant to be put in front of a computer to learn from. It doesn't fold flat or stay open when trying to work the lessons making it difficult to work. This is simply a quality book that doesn't take into account using a fold open flat spine or spiral spine. I wish books like this that are made to teach while using a computer would stay open to the page without damaging the book (creasing spine, etc).

I like to take care of my books and I won't fold it back, etc to make it stay open. There are spiral options as well as a spine design that allows it to open flat. Either would make this a perfect book to learn from.

Meant to be viewed on an iPod!

I purchased this DVD at a recent seminar.

To my surprise, I found that the training movies are all small (640x360) sized meant to be installed on an iPod. In fact, the only movies on the DVD are in a folder called "ipodcameraraw"! Where are the DVD size movies??? None of this is indicated on the case. There is only an iPod icon which means that an iPod version is "included". I took this to mean that there is also a full-sized version included. Not so.

I don't want to learn Camera Raw or anything else from the tiny screen of an iPod, I want normal DVD-sized videos to run on my PC screen like the 880x660 videos that [...] provides.

Sure, I can re-size the iPod videos if I run them one-by-one in Quicktime rather than from the menu. But if I do that they are, of course, unclear.

And speaking of the menu, I had to hunt around the DVD until I found the "index.html" file which turned out to be the menu. The autorun does not call it up.

The tutorials themselves are fine and I have no issue with them but I have to say that all-in-all this is a rather shabby effort on the part of a company whose main business is providing training.

No hard cover book!

I ordered this "hardcover book" with DVD to find that it was only a DVD. I returned it for credit but it is still incorrectly listed in the Books category and incorrectly states that it is a "hardcover". The DVD delivered does not look at all like the illustration (not an important point, mind you).

About the Author

Gary Rockswold is a professor of mathematics at Minnesota State University—Mankato. He received his BA in mathematics and physics from St. Olaf College and his Ph.D. in applied mathematics from Iowa State. He was elected to the honor societies of Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, and Sigma Xi. He has been a principal investigator at the Minnesota Supercomputer Institute and has published several research articles discussing parallel processing and numerical analysis. He is also the author or coauthor of more than 10 current textbooks. At regional and national meetings, he has given numerous presentations related to teaching mathematics. During his thirty-five-year career, Gary has taught mathematics, physical science, astronomy, and computer science at a variety of student levels, ranging from junior high to graduate. Making mathematics meaningful and relevant for students at the developmental and precalculus levels is of special interest to him. He also has a passion for professing mathematics and for communicating the amazing impact that mathematics has on our society.

 

Terry Krieger has taught mathematics for over fifteen years at the middle school, high school, vocational, community college, and university levels. He graduated summa cum laude from Bemidji State University in Bemidji, Minnesota with a BA in secondary mathematics education. He received his MA in mathematics from Minnesota State University—Mankato. In addition to his teaching experience in the United States, Terry has taught mathematics in Tasmania, Australia and in a rural school in Swaziland, Africa, where he served as a Peace Corps volunteer. Outside of teaching, Terry enjoys wilderness camping, trout fishing and home improvement projects. His past experiences include running two marathons, climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro, and watching the sunset from the banks of the Nile. He currently resides in Rochester, Minnesota with his wife and family. Terry has been involved with various aspects of mathematics textbook publication for more than ten years.

I hope they improved this...

I am writing this review rather late. This was a required text for a class that I took in 2008, when CS3 had just been released.

I hope that this book is in a revised edition since then. The information on Action Script 3.0 had some innacuracies, especially in the later chapters. I specifically remember that the instructions on creating Printing options in a Flash document and creating a pre-loader for a Flash page were totally wrong.

Also, the early edition that we used for our class had severe binding problems. The book itself fell apart. Out of a class of about 30 people, more than half had the binding of their books fail so that the pages fell out.

All in all, I do hope that there has been a major revision of the text and an improvement in the quality of the book since I purchased it in 2008.

Good but not great

This book is divided into numerous chapters that can be treated as stand-alone references for a given topic. The author provides helpful implementation guidance, decent graphics, and examples. Where I found the book lacking was its lack of flow . . . there really is no narrative that connects the chapters and the deeper instruction that I wanted can only be obtained by bying one of Lynda.com's instructional DVDs. Any surprise that the book is published by Lynda.com? :-) I recommend you start with "Flash CS3: the Missing Manual" or any of the Flash books published by the ED series. Also, "How to Cheat with Flash CS3" is very helpful.

Excellent, well paced and comprehensive study of Flash CS3

This text presents an excellent and practical view of Flash CS3. In addition to being a very comprehensive reference book, I've found that this book can take you from 0 to 10 (ten being well structured)in using Flash to accomplish many tasks. I am truly impressed by the "teaching" structure of this text. The examples are very instructional and interactive. I applaud this author for not leaving the reader "hanging out there." Great presentation and the included CD is also a great resource.
