About the Author
Rick McCleary has been a leading innovator in applying fine arts sensibilities to commercial projects for the past 20 years, collaborating with clients to create fresh and compelling images. Some of his clients have included American Express, Netcom Soultions, PBS, and the US Army. He received his MFA in 1981 from George Washington University, and is on the adjunct faculty in the graphic design department of Marymount University. He lectures on CMYK at local ASMP (American Society of Media Photographers) chapter meetings, and has been interviewed on the topic for the ASMP Bulletin. His work has been seen in numerous gallery shows and is represented in many private collections.

Essential guide for the bewildered

This book saved my color life!
Written as one professional talking to another, and yet as one friend helping another, this book offers easy to follow instructions for converting files to CMYK.
I have a few massive books on my shelf on color management that left me overwhelmed and confused about the process of converting my digital art files for publication.
CMYK 2.0 cleared everything out of the way and made it possible for me to confidently convert color sensitive works. I never thought it possible that I could understand and learn how to do this, but now I CAN, thanks to this book!
It simplifies the process and offers a step by step guide on how to do it. It also offers common sense advice on the realities of it all, which helped me realign my mindset as to what was possible and what expectations I should let go of.
I just got compliments from the production team who got my CMYK converted files.
If you have felt lost about this process, this is THE book to have!

If you care about color accuracy, you need this book!

As a photographer and graphic and web designer, who started out as a color printer for a photographic studio, color has always been critical to me. Easy enough when I was just doing my own darkroom work. Now that I print digitally, I needed to get things to print to match what I was seeing on my monitor. And as a graphic designer, I have to work with printers. All different ones. Getting my designs and photos to reproduce well proved to be difficult. As a result of reading CMYK 2.0, everything immediately improved.
McClary writes clearly and well. Despite the technical topic, the book is actually easy to read. His images have wonderful color. There is no green in the shadows or other off-putting casts. They have punch. Just what I want and now am getting closer to.
The book is well organized. The step-by-step instructions are clear. The subject is big enough that I could not absorb it all in one reading, but each time I refer back to it, I find things getting easier and better.
I strongly recommend this book to all photographers and designers, without reservation.

Excellent Book!

Rick McCleary has hit a 'Home Run' with CMYK 2.0. He outlines clearly how the intelligent use of color management, good coordination and good process control lead to outstanding results on press. His photography, reproduced prolifically and beautifully throughout the book, lends credence to his approach and shows how 'good' CMYK output can be when following his methods. His reproductions, detail and color are simply stunning.
He explains what is possible (and what is not) and maps out clearly how to get there. In Chapter 6, he provides clear, step by step instructions to help the photographer, designer and pre-press professional prepare files that squeeze the utmost from a well run press (or inkjet). A lot of time is dedicated to preparing 'sound RGB files', soft proofing, and making adjustments to retain critical color and detail, converting to CMYK, tweaking the file once in CMYK, and delivering files that will maximize the press's capabilities.
The book is not an in-depth treatise on Photoshop editing, nor is it meant to be, however he does provide many excellent techniques for color correction, setting appropriate shadows and highlights, dealing with 'out of gamut colors', retaining and detail, sharpening and maximizing the capabilities of CMYK on press.
I strongly recommend this book to all those who wish to improve their results on press, and those who wish to move into the 21st century and the future of commercial printing. You'll love the excellent photography too!
