About the Author

Tim Isted has been writing software for Macintosh computers since 1995. He also builds web applications using Rails, PHP, and .NET and has been known to develop for Windows machines too. Also a professional musician and singing teacher, he tries to divide his time fairly equally between conducting, accompanying, teaching, and writing software. Previous musings on Core Data for desktop development can be found on his blog at www.timisted.net, and he is also co-organizer of NSConference, a new Mac developer conference taking place in both Europe and the USA.

Tom Harrington switched from writing software for embedded systems and Linux to Mac OS X in 2002 when he started Atomic Bird, LLC. All iOS developers need this book!

Note: I did receive the example code from the author of this book. He is working with the Publisher to get the code available on their website. Meantime he noted he is glad to make it available simply by emailing him a request.

Got my copy yesterday and have been skimming through it. Recently started another book on the same topic by APress. Both appear to be good books but this one I have been waiting over a year for. I am not disappointed in the wait because the book is up to date on the latest iOS at the time of publishing. Just glancing through the book, I can tell it is written by two iOS veteran programmers who are there to guide the reader with best practices and a lot of things to watch out for. For example, there is a section describing various ways of storing binary large objects (BLOBS) and the authors present a handful of options and explain when each can be useful and what to watch out for with respect to memory management and future needs to adjust the object model with new versions.

I plan to update this review after working through the sample code and reading the book cover to cover. But for now, I can say that in the handful of pages I have read over, the book has well paid for itself in helping me understand how to write a professional class application. I am fairly new to iPhone development having only a single app for sale on Apple's App Store. If I had this book during development of that application, it would be a far better app in many respects related to data storage. Looking forward to my next app which will use Core Data with the help provided in this book. Thanks to the authors!

2nd Update (7/6/11)
I felt compelled to update my review and also to comment on the other reviewer who noted that chapter 5 is confusing. Well, that reviewer states correctly that chapter five takes chapter 4 and reworks the code. Chapter five shows how to use an NSFetchedResultsController, a class that works as a go-between of in the example a SQLite database and the in-memory object context "object graph". It is a difficult concept to grasp but nonetheless, I think the authors do a good job showing the standard methods used by Core Data. I think the authors intent is to build up to showing the more excellent way of working with data by way of showing a more primitive way first. Chapter four used a basic array to hold the data but that would not scale well with an application that had hundreds or thousands of data objects. Yes they could have probably went straight into the chapter 5 content but in my opinion, since the whole subject is rather complex to grasp, leaving out chapter 4 would have made it very difficult to understand the technology explained in chapters five and onward. I am now nearing the end of this book and still feel that it was a very good investment. I am about to jump back over to completing the Apress book on Core Data which I bought at the same time as this book and will later post back if I feel this book is as good or better. I find this book to be a very valuable desk reference. Both books do require a good understanding of Objective-C and are written with the expectation that the reader is well versed in using the XCode IDE. So if you don't know Objective-C or the basics of working in XCode, I recommend getting that foundation before jumping into either of these books.

Well written and very thorough.

I keep this by my desk when I'm coding for iOS. It's great for reference and every time I go to look something up I find a concrete answer. The sections on predicates is also very good and I reference it often. If you're brand new to Core Data on iOS, this is a great starting point, or if you're more experienced and are looking for a quick reference book, this book is for you.

Excellent book, very thorough

I just finished reading this book and loved it. Now, to set the tone of this review, I will say that I am an experienced software developer, and had a little experience with Core Data prior to getting the book. The book is not en entry-level book, nor should it be; Core Data is a complicated framework. The book assumes, as it must, that the reader knows something already about Cocoa development, Objective-C, and memory management. I think that's reasonable given the sophistication of the topic.

I've read many technical books on varying topics in the iOS ecosystem, some good, some not so good. This book is excellent, in my opinion. The topic coverage is both broad and deep. The information is presented clearly and logically, and the examples are spot on and easy to grasp. What I think is more notable, however, is that this book is not just going to sit on my shelf now that I've read it. It is going to be a constant reference for me, which is, I think, what makes a good book great.

I highly recommend this book if you want to understand Core Data including and beyond the basics.

About the Author
Scott Kelby is president of the National Association of Photoshop Professionals (NAPP), the trade organization for Adobe Photoshop users, which has 70,000 members worldwide. Learning cool effects was never so easy!

I have a couple of Scott's books (and love his style) but my Down & Dirty Tricks book just arrived and it's quickly becoming my favorite. He's just nailed all these cool effects that I've sat there and wondered "How'd they do that?". I'm already playing around with some, and having a ton of fun learning.

I'm about a 5 on a scale of 1-10 in Photoshop and I found the steps very easy to follow. The real beauty is that the book has given me techniques and ideas that I can put to work right now - I didn't have to read the whole book to use it. You can dive in anywhere and learn techniques you can apply to your own projects. I haven't looked at it yet but there's a companion web download page too. Just my opinion, but I think even a more experienced Photoshop user can get a lot out of this book (it's perfect for beginners or intermediate users, so if you think you could teach your own class, maybe review it in the book shop first).

Sometimes I see a look I want to replicate, but it's hard to know where to start, I like how Scott breaks it down. There's even a cool chapter on 3D, which I have been afraid to even play with so far (of course it looks easy when it's step-by-step). These techniques will seriously make me look like a Photoshop guru and that will put money in my pocket (which I really need right now).

Some reviewers should just watch TV instead

I usually don't trash other reviewers, but this time some of them wrote reviews that really annoy me.

If you bought a wrench and used it to fix a nail sticking out of a dresser, but found it didn't work, would you blame the wrench? Would you write a review saying what a lousy wrench it is? Or, would you quietly return it and get a hammer instead? It seems to me that several "reviewers" here are blaming the wrench!

As another example, if you like mysteries and buy a romance book by the same author, it isn't fair to say that the romance title is a bad mystery.

When the covers of a book clearly describe what it is about and who it is for, and the editorial review on this page says the same thing but someone buys it withoug reading any of that, hoping for totally different content, it isn't fair to blame the author. Giving a 1-star review says more about the incompetence of the reviewer that it will ever say about the book. Unfortunately (and unfairly) it kills the book's average review. This book deserves a 5-star average. It meets and exceeds the needs of its audience. If you're not in that audience that's OK; it means the book isn't for you, not that it is a bad book.

The covers say that this book is about special effects. Want to learn how to make type appear on fire, look here. Want to figure out how to make a special layout or design, then this book will show you how to do it in photoshop. Kelby has been teaching this stuff for years, both in books, on tours and online. Naturally, that's all written in Kelby's humorous, self-deprecating style and it makes learning fun. It is yet another great book from one of the industry's best authors.

The fact that this author has also written many best-selling books about camera raw, workflow and sharpening, and has built a loyal following for such content is great. If that's what you need, then run to get one of those titles.

However, if you've bought several of his "better pictures" books and liked them but bought this one without reading the editorial material and were then disappointed that is wasn't for you, just return it quietly and tell the bookseller "my mistake". Don't make an online fool of yourself by telling everyone you can't tell the difference between a wrench and a hammer.

Makes Learning Fun

I think this book does a great job with the purpose for which it was written, special effects. If you're looking another Camera Raw/Sharpening/Color Correction book, this is not your book.

I would consider myself an advanced beginner with photoshop. So many of the reference books I have show "how" to do something without every really explaining why you would want to do that. By putting it in the context of projects, Kelby does both. You can learn how an effect was done while at the same time getting an idea of when and why you might want to do the same thing with your own images.

It's written at a level that someone new to photoshop can handle w/out being tedious for those who already know some of the shortcuts.

Personally, I love Scott Kelby's sense of humor. I actually enjoy reading his books --not just flipping through them like a I would most manuals.

Great SEO and SEM Tips!

Great book though is not real linear, more like lots of great ideas to make your website "more findable." Would like a book though that takes you on the initial web design process through going public with it, in order. On whether the book is worth the price? Of course it is, you only need one great tip to add more traffic to your website so it easily justifies the book expense.

Excellent book full of practical, usable advice

Building Findable Websites: Web Standards, SEO, and Beyond by Aaron Walter is the best web development book I've read in a long time. It is densely packed with actionable advice for improving the "findability" of your site, and in so doing, improve the usability, readability, speed, and manageability of your site. Findability is a broader concept than simply SEO. It is helping people find your site, helping people navigate your site and retrieve the information/action they want from it, and encouraging people to return to your site.

Walter covers a wide range of areas you can work on to improve the findability of your site, from the importance of quality content with strategically placed keywords, using semantic markup with clear hierarchies, server-side strategies such as friendly urls, rss and email subscriptions, etc.

I heartily recommend this book to not just web designers and developers, but also website owners and managers and web content writers.

A buddy of mine loaned this book to me and after reading the first chapter I knew I had to own it myself, so I went online and ordered it straight away.

This book doesn't disappoint. Its very well written and very informative. A highly recommended addition to your SEO resource quiver!

Eric Chaisson

Eric holds a doctorate in astrophysics from Harvard University, where he spent 10 years on the faculty of Arts and Sciences. For several years thereafter, he was a senior scientist and director of educational programs at the Space Telescope Science Institute and adjunct professor of physics at Johns Hopkins University. For the past decade, Eric has been at Tufts University, where he is a

research professor in the Department of Physics and in the School of Education, and director of the Wright Center for Innovative Science Education. He has written 12 books on astronomy, which have received such literary awards as the Phi Beta Kappa Prize, two American Institute of Physics Awards, and Harvard’s Smith-Weld Prize for Literary Merit. He has published more than 100 scientific papers in professional journals and has also received Harvard’s Bok Prize for original contributions to astrophysics.

Steve McMillan

Steve holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in mathematics from Cambridge University and a doctorate in astronomy

from Harvard University. He held post-doctoral positions at the University of Illinois and Northwestern University, where he continued his research in theoretical astrophysics, star clusters, and numerical modeling. Steve is currently Distinguished Professor of Physics at Drexel University and a frequent visiting researcher at Princeton’s Institute for Advanced Study and the University of Amsterdam. He has published more than 70 scientific papers in professional journals.

Fantastic, Easy to Read Book

Great! Needed this book for a summer class in Astronomy. At my school, the class is in the Physics department. I was super nervous to take the class as I don't do well in mathematics, but this book made the course easier to understand and grasp! Great diagrams and examples inside! I had taken an Astronomy class in the past- well, the same class- and didn't get the grade I needed for my program. That book wasn’t as helpful as this one due to the fact it talked more in the physics department than in the descriptive astronomy for beginners. I prefer this book and will be keeping it for future use in my future career.

Best InDesign Training Manual for a Beginner

If you are a new InDesign user and/or do not understand concepts like bleed & slug/kerning &leading, then read Lynda.com's Hands On Training (HOT) first. Otherwise, you may want to consider Adobe's Classroom in a Book. HOT does a better job of covering the basics and the included videos are superb. But Classroom in a Book is also excellent and carries you a bit further than does HOT, particularly if you are producing a book with chapters.

In addition to reading both of these texts, I went through the entire Total Training Video Workshop that ships with the CS2 and found it less useful than the books but still interesting and helpful. I also subscribed to Lynda.com's online video training (after watching all the free movies first) which may be the easiest way to pick up tips or understand something you can't quite qet. Neither of the two books (nor Adobe's own literature) were particularly useful at explaining the Bridge or Version Cue but videos on Lynda.com's website that helped me understand how to use them.

Easy to Follow Training

I'm with a non-profit organization, and I was selected to do the publicity for our regional conference in 2008. Needed to produce a few mailers and a program that would eventually be sent to a printshop. I didn't have a clue, as how do use Adobe Indesign.

This book takes nothing for granted, and steps back to the beginner level, making it very easy to follow along during all the exercises. Includes book with lessons and CD with lesson exercises, plus how-to movies.

Great Learning Tools

If you're serious about learning InDesign this is a good place to start. It has a nice blend of basic exercises, bonus exercises, demo movies, and printed information. If you are a hands-on type learner you will enjoy and benefit from Hand-On Training. This book is exactly what I was looking for - straight forward, enjoyable, and practical.

Frankly, overpriced and underwhelming

The book part of the duo is no more than a pamphlet, less than 1/4" thick and 6" wide, 63 pages covering 12 pretty simple techniques for creating templates for wedding albums. All are well explained and illustrated. None is breathtakingly original. The dvd part of the duo provides a few more templates, a little bit more complex, well demonstrated. Again, nothing mindblowing. The basic lesson to be learned is work smarter not harder, create templates when you can, and automate as much as possible. Basic requirement is general (not advanced) familiarity with Photoshop.

Awesome DVD!

I really enjoyed watching this DVD! Scott Kelby is very detailed and shows you ALL of the steps to make each layout and also how to save it as a template that you can reuse. It comes with a booklet they shows different techniques and layout designs than what is on the DVD. It is great for a beginner like me! If you are a pro at Photoshop, you might not like all of the detailed steps, but it was great for me!

Nice Packaging, but Not Much Substance

I bought this package thinking that it would have some really good techniques on retouching wedding photos and when I got it, the book and DVD only covered basic Photoshop techniques that are applied to wedding photos. I would recommend this package to beginners, but for the mid to expert Photoshop users; I recommend passing on this.

About the Author

Trevor Getz is an Assoc. Professor of African history at San Francisco State University and author of Slavery and Reform in West Africa. He has co-authored several textbooks including Exchanges: A Global History and the forthcoming African Histories. Trained as an Africanist, he was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of the Western Cape and the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa. He is currently working on both a graphic novel and a monograph of the life of Abina Mansah, a young enslaved woman who liberated herself in 19th century Ghana .

Heather Streets-Salter is an associate professor of history at Washington State University, where she teaches world and imperial history at the graduate and undergraduate levels. She is director of the WSU History Department's world history Ph.D. program, and she directs the undergraduate program in World Civilizations. She is the author of Martial Races: The Military, Race, and Masculinity in British Imperial Culture, 1857-1914 (2004), and is co-author, with Jerry Bentley and Herb Ziegler, of Traditions and Encounters: A Brief Global History (2007 and 2010). She is currently working on a monograph entitled Webs of Empire, which explores the connections between both colonial administrators and nationalists in French Indochina, British Malaya, and the Dutch East Indies from 1890 to 1937.
