Worst book ever! period
By LT72884
Being a Mechanical engineer, this has to be the WORST trig book ever. The examples in the book are so very basic that they will not help you understand how to perform the more advanced problems. Granted, you have to know the basics, but to skip the in between material of how you got from the basics to the advance is very poor writing and teaching. Its like being shown how to add 2/4 + 1/4 but not shown how to add 1/2 + 3/4. This book does not show how to do the steps to verify identities. It shows you how to solve very simple simple ones which are no brainers, but yet will not show you how to solve more advanced ones at all. Never tells you to use the conjugate on a single fraction in order to convert it to an identity. College algebra(math 1050) doesn't even cover that aspect. math 1050 only uses conjugates to get rid of radicals in the denominator. This book assumes way to much from the students. This book will NOT explain what you need to know. I just finished the class today and this book did not help me with the final at all. The math department of our school is trying to help me out because i may not be able to move on to calc because of this book. Assumptions are the mother of all F ups and this book assumes way to much..For those who dont teach or use algebra every bloody day of there life, this book wont work for you. Its not user friendly, its expert friendly..

If you are new to trig, this book is not for you
By jessevb
I cannot even tell you how many times this books takes an extremely simple concept then either doesn't explain how to do it, or gives you an overly complicated explaination. I have had several visits to my professors office for clarification on several things in this book in which I usually leave thinking "wow why would anyone explain it the way this book did". Although on the bright side, this book did have some challenging problems that helped you figure out different ways to apply new concepts.

Horrible

How do I begin? Mathematics textbooks should always include more information than the average student needs, but in a sensible manner. Let me say that again: Mathematics textbooks should always include more information than the average student needs, but in a sensible manner.
This means that when you are learning a simple subject like Trigonometry (it is simple compared to learning Algebra) that you should not have the displeasure of having to look up possible explanations online. If you have to do that, the writer has failed.
So why, then, is the market flooding us with substandard mathematics textbooks? If you compare this book to a book entitled "College Algebra and Trigonometry" by Aufmann, et al, then you will find that not only are there missing pieces of proofs in Dugopolski's book, which make things extremely confusing, but also missing ideas! That's right! De Moivre's Theorem isn't even mentioned in this one. In addition to this, and indeed as others reviewing this book have stated, there is very little treatment of advanced concepts here. I have had books explain things so well that the advanced concepts at the end of the chapter could easily be solved by using a little creativity with each tool you had learned. There is no such treatment here. Trigonometry is vital to understanding required for calculus.
I paid around $265 for this book. If you are going to study Trigonometry, just use Algebra and Trigonometry by Aufmann, Barker, and Nation. Their book covers all of the precalculus topics you need in addition to a well done treatment on Trig that is not as confusing. Their book is also cheaper if you buy an older edition. Shop smart, don't buy this crap.
