About the Author
Marvin Bittinger For over thirty-eight years, Professor Marvin L. Bittinger has been teaching math at the university level. Since 1968, he has been employed at Indiana University - Purdue University Indianapolis, and is now professor emeritus of mathematics education. Professor Bittinger has authored over 190 publications on topics ranging from basic mathematics to algebra and trigonometry to applied calculus. He received his BA in mathematics from Manchester College and his PhD in mathematics education from Purdue University. Special honors include Distinguished Visiting Professor at the United States Air Force Academy and his election to the Manchester College Board of Trustees from 1992 to 1999. His hobbies include hiking in Utah, baseball, golf, and bowling. Professor Bittinger has also had the privilege of speaking at many mathematics conventions, most recently giving a lecture entitled "Baseball and Mathematics." In addition, he also has an interest in philosophy and theology, in particular, apologetics. Professor Bittinger currently lives in Carmel, Indiana with his wife Elaine. He has two grown and married sons, Lowell and Chris, and four granddaughters. David Ellenbogen David Ellenbogen has taught math at the college level for twenty-two years, spending most of that time in the Massachusetts and Vermont community college systems, where he has served on both curriculum and developmental math committees. He has also taught at St. Michael's College and The University of Vermont. Professor Ellenbogen has been active in the Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges since 1985, having served on its Developmental Mathematics Committee and as a delegate, and has been a member ofthe Mathematical Association of America since 1979. He has authored dozens of publications on topics ranging from prealgebra to calculus and has delivered lectures at numerous conferences on the use of language in mathematics. Professor Ellenbogen received his BA in mathematics from Bates College and his MA in community college mathematics education from The University of Massachusetts at Amherst. A co-founder of the Colchester Vermont Recycling Program, Professor Ellenbogen has a deep love for the environment and the outdoors, especially in his home state of Vermont. In his spare time, he enjoys playing keyboard in the band Soularium, volunteering as a community mentor, hiking, biking, and skiing. He has two sons, Monroe and Zack.

Must have book for any algebra class

I purchased this book for my algebra class it has many questions and answers with solutions that helped me alot during finals. There are over 1000 questions so its a quick guide and it goes to the point. the solutions are very clearly worded and the steps are very informative.

I was skeptical, but hopeful. I needed Mastering for a semester long assignment in Microbiology. I didn't know if the code would work, but THANKFULLY, not only does it work, I have the E-text!!! That means for the wonderful price of $9 I have Mastering AND the e-text. I am sending my $45 book rental back tomorrow! So glad this seller was reliable and quick. Organizing and Editing Your Photos with Picasa

I am new to digicams and got hooked on the freebie Picasa program from Google almost right from the start. Picasa handled and organized all of my pictures quite well--until I had 1000 pictures from a vacation to print out.

I didn't want to use Picasa's on line printing services cuz I have a local Costco that will give me my picture, inexpensively, in one hour. But I could not figure out how to get my corrected computer pixes to Costco. The book did answer my question of how to make a CD--with the desired corrected images--and I took the CD to Costco.

That explanation alone did the trick and made the book purchase easily worthwhile. There are lots of other things that the program will do and I learned them on my own, but for others, the book would really help to get your pictures up and running.

I am still low on the digicam learning curve and decided to test PhotoShop Elements(PSE). I have taken local Adult Ed classes to learn that program. Thus, I have integrated the two programs by using PSE to correct using the clone tool and then organizing and making quickie corrections in Picasa and then making a CD to take to Costco. That's the way I do it.

I had downloaded Picasa a few years ago, right after Google bought it. I used it a little, but took a course in a more sophisticated program which I later started teaching to seniors. Picasa took a back burner on my computer. I was recently asked to teach Picasa to seniors, and figured I'd better refresh my limited knowledge of it. WOW, was I impressed with Steve Schwartz's book and the Picasa program as it now stands! The book is just what it promises: a VISUAL guide. Screen shots are well done, as is the text, and the program is really quite powerful, especially for a free download. Leave it to Google, which does things right, and Mr. Schwartz's know-how to present this freebie in a clear, concise way. For the casual photographer, Picasa's editing capabilities are more than sufficient, easy to use and to understand. Likewise with the organizer. One of these days, I may just say the heck with the more sophisticated (and FAR FROM FREE) program I have been teaching--it is far too complicated and time-consuming for most people. Picasa, now promoted to an icon in my Quick Launch Bar, will be the only photo/editor/organizer I will use.

"Organizing and Editing Your Photos with Picasa" by Steve Schwartz was a blessing to find. Picasa2 came with the new workstation I purchased. I had no idea how Picasa functioned and kept seeing new folders and duplicate pictures. Some photos were among my written files, most not. I knew it had to be me doing something I didn't yet understand. Thanks to "Organizing and Editing Your Photos with Picasa" my digital albums are now orderly and manageable. Great book! Fast shipping too.

This book covers automating Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. I was mainly interested in actions for Photoshop. But I can see that when I am ready to work in Illustrator and InDesign this book will be the place to start. As Mr. Ralston points out actions are only the beginning of automating Photoshop. I have been hesitant to jump in and try some of the process that would make my work a bit quicker and less filled with drudgery but, with this book it is like having a teacher at the ready to help get you moving. If you come up against a road block, the tools to get moving are in the book. Plus what kind of tasks to automate and free your self from these repetitive boring tasks and get on with creativity.

"The Designer's Apprentice "is aimed at a professional's needs but I felt I benefited from many of the tips and hints in this book. The tutorials are step by step and easy to follow. The projects and scripts for this book can be downloaded so you can work on each project when you register the book at the website.

This is the kind of reference book you want to keep on your book shelf ready to use when you need it.

Could have been deeper

As it turned out, I was probably not the market this book was aimed at. I am already a programmer and understand the power of automation. I am dabbling in Photoshop and wanted to learn how to maximize what is offered by Adobe. A lot of the book is spent trying to convince the reader how wonderful automation is. Which may be more useful if the reader is an artist. In the end, it does give an overview of what is possible which provided things to dig deeper into to learn about. While not totally skipping Windows, the book is probably 75% Macintosh focused. One whole chapter was on an application that only is available on the Mac. Which as a Windows user, was totally useless. Still the style is readable and there is a lot of good information.

This was listed as a required book for my college math class. What I didn't realize was that it was an answer book for all the odd numbered questions. I don't think it is absolutely necessary - handy to have, but not necessary. I would have rather saved the money.

Terrible

This is not a good math book. It fails to explain many key concepts, and most of the illustrations and examples are not well explained. This book tries to do so much, and fails in practically every aspect.

As one point the book says that using the quadratic formula is often tedious and a waste of time, and then goes on to spend the rest of the chapter using the quadratic formula. This is the kind of logic you should expect from this book.

A problem-centered math text...

Lial and Hornsby have written a college-level intermediate algebra text that demonstrates the best and the worst of US math instruction. On the positive side, this is a lavishly produced book: great detail, lots of graphs and clearly ordered explanations, excellent colors, nearly 1 1/4 inches thick with what they consider the 11 essentials of intermediate algebra (listed above in the Amazon.com notes). The books comes from Addison-Wesley-Longman, from which you can purchase an integrated set of videos and CD-ROM of testing problems (not used or viewed for this review). Theirs truly is a work of love. On the other hand, they represent the most tedious part of American math instruction, which is interminable problems--5,921, to be exact--which roll through the book, section after section. Their extraordinary work makes me wonder how any college math teacher in a 3-credit course could hope to get through 2% of the problems in a semester. Many of the problems are repetitious, going over the same features (of problem solving) again and again. I fear that only the grinds and math gearheads will appreciate this.
Even more worrisome, however, is the absence of conceptual integration, other than that these 11 topics are "important" if you want to go to advanced algebra or college geometry. The one pertinent conceptual comment was that polynomials are to algebra as numbers are to arithmetic, but the authors never followed up on this. It is not clear, for example, why inverse functions are related (or not) to conic sections. The handling of systems of linear equations borrowed liberally from matrix algebra, but the authors chose not to demonstrate more general solutions and stuck with solving the problems "manually."
More than concepts in math, American students know how to solve problems, which presumably is why this book, reflecting its intended audience, is so problem-saturated. Even so, when we test our best students against the best from other countries, we do not fare too well. Perhaps it is because we ignore the structure of the thinking in math, and substitute problem-solving instead. The result is that attentive students will know the notes, and some will know the notes quite well, but not the music.

Helps a lot

This is a terrific book. It makes me feel that I shouldn't bother to attend my math class in school. The book explains concepts clearly. You don't even need a mentor. You can manage the book all by yourself, for the book itself is your teacher, your mentor. There is an abundance of exercises for you to practise. They never run out of it. It makes you feel that math is fun. It is the simply the best way to learn math. The best part of the book is the review after every chapter. I can learn back whatever I've missed. I'm an 8th grader only, but I can still manage the 2nd year of high school algebra. The book has helped a lot. The book is perfect for talented 8th graders.

About the Author

J.S.Ratti has been teaching mathematics at all levels for over 35 years. He is currently a full professor of mathematics and director of the "Center for Mathematical Services" at the University of South Florida. Professor Ratti is the author of numerous research papers in analysis, graph theory, and probability. He has won several awards for excellence in undergraduate teaching at University of South Florida and known as the coauthor of a successful finite mathematics textbook.

 

Marcus McWaters is currently the chair of the Mathematics Department at the University of South Florida, a position he has held for the last *eleven* years. Since receiving his PhD in mathematics from the University of Florida, he has taught all levels of undergraduate and graduate courses, with class sizes ranging from 3 to 250. As chair, he has worked intensively to structure a course delivery system for lower level courses that would improve the low retention rate these courses experience across the country. When not involved with mathematics or administrative activity, he enjoys playing racquetball, spending time with his two daughters, and traveling the world with his wife.

I wish we didn't have to use this book

So awful. Whenever we get tested on exercises in this book I am always at a loss as to how to apply the concepts in the chapter. In the back, there are solutions, but no explanations. Which means that, however much I bang my head against the wall, I won't get any closer to enlightenment.

If the questions, and their corresponding solutions in the back of the book, weren't so cryptic, I would give this book a much higher rating. As it is, either the chapters need to be rewritten to incorporate the missing material found in the exercises, or the solutions need to be rewritten so that students can follow them when the chapter doesn't address something.

Books like this are why I grew up thinking I was not good at math. Really, I was just cheated by an education system that insists on quantity over quality. This book covers everything, for sure -- but it glides over the surface and expects you to follow along in depth.

I'm getting a bad grade in this class, and I'm sorry to say, but this book is partly to blame.

Daughter didn't want me to order it. "I don't need that Dad". It didn't take her and her study partner long to begin praising it. Helps them see how to go about working the problems. Certainly cut down on my tutoring time. I highly recommend it.

College Algebra and Trigonometry 2nd edition

The book itself came in excellent condition. Before I ordered the book I called Amazon to make sure the book came with the access code to use myMathLab.com which is necessary to do the book work. He claimed it came with the book cost so I proceeded to place the order. It didn't arrive with the code so after calling back to the Amazon representative he credited me $50 for the inconvenience and sent me a link to acquire the code with the $50 credit. The code was inaccessible with the link and by looking through other resources discovered the code to access the tools on the website was around $85 which was even more money to spend on top of the original cost of the book. I finally gained access to the website to do the book work to discover that it is also in PDF format. Pretty much a waste of money to get the book, and it was too late to return the book after I discovered this.
